o I am responsible for the SWA’s engagement with the Department for International Trade, the Office for the Internal Market, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and political stakeholders (MPs/MSPs/business groups/NGOs) active in international trade policy.o I identify important stakeholders and set out plans on how to engage them on key policy areas, including trade negotiations and market access liberalisation.o I deliver presentations to senior government officials on SWA market access barriers.o I attend meetings and roundtables with senior stakeholders including at Director/Deputy Director level in HM Government and Ministerial meetings on my policy areas. o I regularly liaise with SWA member companies to understand the impacts of government policies on their business, working with them to quantify the impact and lobby government officials to find solutions to problems and identify opportunities. o I organise networking events in order to influence key stakeholders.o I am accountable for delivering on KPIs set out in the SWA’s business plan which requires me to keep any business activities within a budget range, in which I am free to organise my activities at my discretion. o I have line management responsibilities for one colleague, organising regular catch ups, objective setting and annual appraisal.o UK/Scotland: Monitor legislation in the UK and Scottish Parliaments. I track Bills through the parliamentary process and engage at Committee and Report Stage to propose amendments via MPs. I follow the work programmes of parliamentary committees to identify opportunities to speak and submit consultation response. I regularly brief MPs/MSPs, orally and written, on our sector’s issues. o EU: I monitor legislative proposals by the European Commission. • The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is the trade body representing distillers, blenders, bottlers, and exporters of Scotch Whisky, an industry worth £5.5bn in GVA to the UK economy and a product exported to 175 markets around the world. • I worked in a small EU and Brexit unit at the SWA which had two core remits: 1) to analyse policy developments during UK-EU negotiations and its impacts on the industry; and 2) to understand the implementation of EU regulations (e.g. 1169/2011) which govern the industry and monitor any new regulations or European Commission initiatives which may have impacted the industry.• I was responsible for drafting position papers on the Scotch Whisky industry’s priorities for the future UK-EU economic relationship, exploring issues such as the level of regulatory alignment, tariffs, customs and excise movements and Geographical Indications.• I coordinated, and submitted, consultation responses to UK Government consultations on behalf of the SWA. This included issues such as the return of duty-free UK-EU post-Brexit and the UK's future applied Most Favoured Nation tariff regime. • I organised the SWA's Brexit Working Group consisting of Corporate and Public Affairs senior management representatives from SWA member companies. I chaired meetings and updated SWA member companies on policy developments.• I represented the SWA on a number of UK Government stakeholder forums including the Department for International Trade's Expert Trade Advisory Groups (ETAGs) on Trade Agreement Continuity and Customs Facilitation. • I lined managed one team member. This included regular catch-ups and guidance, as well as holiday sign off and annual appraisal.

• The John Lewis Partnership is the UK's largest employee-owned business, consisting of the John Lewis and Waitrose brands.• I had responsibility for monitoring and developing three public policy areas: the impact of exiting the EU on the Partnership; initiating development of a retail strategy for Scotland; and development of policy on business rates reform. • Responded to calls for evidence from government departments, including BEIS and HMT, on future customs policy and developed the Partnership’s response to the Migration Advisory Committee’s call for evidence on the effect of leaving the EU on EEA migration. • Led the development of a Retail Strategy for Scotland, sponsored by Keith Brown MSP (then Cabinet Secretary for the Economy), and worked with Scottish Government civil servants and Scottish business stakeholders.• Developed briefings, alongside colleagues, for John Lewis and Waitrose executive teams, including the Chairman Sir Charlie Mayfield, ahead of key meetings with Government Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and leading Opposition politicians.

I was responsible for the overall strategic direction of Energy UK’s political engagement in Westminster and the devolved administrations. This included the following responsibilities:Public Affairs• Liaised with policy colleagues to define key industry positions and produce political engagement plans.• Drafted letters setting out the energy industry’s position in areas of interest to senior Government Ministers often taking complex policy issues and communicating them in an accessible way.• Attended senior meetings with the Chief Executive and ensure that executive level staff are briefed ahead of meetings, select committee appearances, and roundtables.• Maintained strong working relationships, and a database of contacts, with several external stakeholders including government departments (BEIS, HMT), government executive agencies (National Infrastructure Commission), NGOs and consumer organisations.Events• Coordinated parliamentary events, including MP drop-in/photo-ops to advise and inform Parliamentarians of industry initiatives.• Organised key industry events, including keynote speakers for Energy UK’s Annual Conference and Annual Industry Lunch.• Chaired the Energy UK Public Affairs Committee made up of public affair representatives from Energy UK’s member companies to relay political intelligence. • Provided support to the Scottish Working Group, the Business Energy Forum and other relevant committees.Management• Line managed two colleagues, provided guidance and support where required and set out core objectives and expectations. My role at Energy UK covered three key areas: political intelligence; event organisation; and stakeholder/public engagement.I was responsible for monitoring all parliamentary activity and regulation affecting the UK's energy industry including primary/secondary legislation coming from Westminster, the European Union and the Scottish Parliament. This involved keeping colleagues up to date on the work of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, working with colleagues to establish policy positions and drafting written responses to calls for evidence.I assisted in the organisation and delivery of a variety of events.I attended meetings with senior Government and Shadow Frontbench MPs and have organised several constituency Energy Advice Days. These events were held across the UK with MPs from all political parties to promote the Home Heat Helpline (a free, impartial helpline which offers help and advice on energy bills). The events offer an opportunity to engage with the public and gain a detailed understanding of how government policy affects consumers.

The PRS is a pooled research facility producing briefings on campaigns and legislation for over 100 Labour MPs in the House of Commons. • Worked closely with MP’s researchers and Shadow Frontbench political advisers to establish Labour Party policy positions on legislation., • Responded to Labour MPs enquiries and acting as a main point of contact for Scottish MPs.• Provided briefings on legislation, committee reports and campaigns led by pressure/lobby groups to MPs.

While working for the British Labour MEP, David Martin, I followed the European Parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO) and the Sub-Committee on Human Rights (DROI) advising my MEP on reports going through the committees. I also worked as the EPLP and S&D link on the AFCO committee flagging any politically sensitive reports and providing briefings on them.In addition to my committee work, I helped guide a report on price volatility in global markets and its impact on food security through the EU-ACP Joint Parliamentary Assembly. I met with a wide range of stakeholders in the role including European Commission officials, NGO campaigners and other MEPs. I was also responsible for my MEP's diary, travel arrangements and drafting responses to constituents.
