I founded the Econtech economic modelling practice in 1994, which adopted the new trading name of Independent Economics in 2011, before being wound down in June 2017. I am known for developing the Murphy family of models of the Australian economy, and for building models for the governments of New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi. I was a regular forecaster of the Australian economy. On the tax policy front, I was centrally involved in modelling the economic impacts of the introduction of the GST, of Australia's key taxes for the Australian Government's Henry Tax Review, and of the proposed cut in the company tax rate for the Treasury. I have also modelled the economic impacts of education, migration, industrial relations policies, import tariffs, regulation and other policy areas.Most recently, I have used my macroeconometric model of the Australian economy to simulate the detailed macro effects of the former Federal Government's large fiscal stimulus in 2020 and 2021 in response to COVID. My analysis was published in Economic Papers in 2023.Now that I've stepped down from directing modelling teams, I divide my time between model-based research at the ANU and closely allied consulting services for the Australian Treasury and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
