Projects include 5G for contribution; 5G for distribution; improving efficiency of broadcast technologies; researching and standardising video compression technology; and machine learning and interpretable AI for visual data processing and video compression.I lead a team of 20 in the section, responsible for both the technical work and staff management and I am part of the Management Team for the Department, helping set the overall agenda and accounting for its successful delivery. I successfully led the BBC R&D team which collaborated with others around the world to develop the second-generation digital terrestrial system (DVB-T2), which underpinned the launch of Freeview HD in 2009 and is regularly used by millions of TV viewers around the world.I edited the ETSI DVB-T2 specification, gaining an international reputation as one of the key experts on DVB-T2. I also invented some of the key underlying technologies, which are now patented.
