Chris is a registered architect with more than 35 years professional experience and the managing director of transport and infrastructure-specialist practice Fereday Pollard. Chris and his original co-founder Ben Fereday, set up Fereday Pollard in mid-1995, aiming to fill what they believed to be a distinct gap in the transport and infrastructure market - to provide well designed humanised architectural and landscape solutions to what were essentially civil engineering led projects. In those early years, the practice worked across several sectors as it developed long-term working relationships with many of the transport and infrastructure agencies, operators and providers, many of whom the practice still works with today. Since Ben Fereday's departure from the practice in 2008 and with the support of three key Directors, Jan Kroes, Clare Donnelly and Chris McCarthy, Chris has led Fereday Pollard and developed a practice brand that is synonymous with that humanising design ethos. The practices involvement in the early design stages of Crossrail set the baseline for this with the commission to design all the surface sites, headhouses and operational structures in the dense urban fabric of east London above the central tunnel. Further commissions followed on Crossrail, not least the award winning new railway station and multi modal transport hub at Abbey Wood on the south east spur which the practice designed and delivered from conception to handover over a 10 year timespan.Other nationally important infrastructure projects also followed which saw Chris and the practice secure the commissions to design all the architectural and landscape aspects of the new sites along the River Thames on the Thames Tideway Tunnel; the new buildings and public realm on National Grid’s LPT1 and LPT 2 London re-cabling programmes; several stints on HS2 and more recently, the Lower Thames Crossing, various water projects such as the new reservoirs at the Fens and in Lincolnshire and new significant railway stations at Cambridge South and Beaulieu. Now working on its 5th DCO in the transport and infrastructure sectors, the humanising ethos of the practice remains as strong today as it was in those early years. Working from their offices in London’s Waterloo, with some of the biggest infrastructure projects of this generation now completed and ‘open for business’, Chris and his highly capable team now look forward to taking their experiences forward into the next exciting stage of Fereday Pollards development.
