FellowZebra Technologies Nov 2003 - Oct 2023Lincoln, RiAfter the sale of ATLANTEK to Zebra, accepted the position of Director of Advanced Technology. Led a small team of electronics and firmware engineers in the development of a high performance, low-cost electronic architecture for dye sublimation photo printing. The architecture uses an Altera FPGA with a system on a programmable chip (SOPC). Multiple NIOS II processors and custom VHDL peripherals are embedded in the FPGA to perform all the communications, image processing, thermal management and media control for a dye sublimation printer. The new architecture was implemented in the Zebra F680 Photo Printer, ZXP8 re-transfer printer and ZXP7 card printer. Worked on consumable authentication for Zebra printer products: ribbons, printheads, batteries and media. Provided firmware architectural support for Jaguar card printer development (ZC100, ZC150, ZC300, ZC350). Improved Image chain algorithms such that these printers have the best print quality of all Zebra card printers. In the later phase of development, took on a firmware program management role, leading a small team of engineers in development of new features for the ZCXXX card printers. Worked on evaluating system to allow Java apps to be developed and executed on printers. Incubated development of battery-operated Zebra IoT sensors using Bluetooth LE. Evaluated BLE location services using Angle-of-Arrival. -
Vice President Of Engineering & PartnerAtlantek Inc. Mar 1987 - Nov 2003Wakefield, RiATLANTEK started as a contract developer of high-performance thermal printing systems. During the 1st ten years, a variety of printers were developed. Some of these included: 2" low-cost medical recorder (HP), 24" & 36" wide format plotters (DUPONT), plastic card printers (DATACARD & 3M), FAX printer (AT&T) and dye sublimation development platform (ICI). During this period, managed the engineering team, was the architect for the electronics and helped develop the electronics & firmware for many of the products. Worked closely with the mechanical engineers to define the product and guide the mechanical development. Estimated the product development costs, determined resource requirements and developed schedules for contract development projects. Wrote product development proposals for customers. Worked closely with customers during development. During the last five years at ATLANTEK, the company began to develop and sell its own products. These products included: plastic card printers, wide format plotters, high performance photo printers (joint development with Kodak) and re-transfer printers. The engineering team grew to approximately 15 engineers, including mechanical, electrical, firmware and software (driver development). Led the engineering team during this period while continuing to contribute to electronic architectures and development of firmware.

Senior Design EngineerGulton Industries Inc. Oct 1984 - Mar 1987East Greenwich, RiCompleted the software design for the CT6100 digitizing recorder. This device accepts up to six channels of analog input, digitizes the signals, and plots the waveforms on 4-inch thermal paper, in real time. The CT6100 used a Motorola 6809 microprocessor with DAC's, ADC's and instrument amplifiers.Designed the hardware and software for the CT6100 Data Capture Card. It contained 65K by 12 bits of dynamic memory with a refresh controller and software. The software allows the CT6100 to digitize waveform data and store it in the 65K buffer at sampling rates up to 13K samples per second. Designed the electronics and firmware for a HP Medical Recorder. The recorder interfaced to the Hewlett Packard line of Patient Monitors and Cardiographs. The recorder would record up to six channels of physiological signals at speeds up to 50 mm/sec with time, date, scales, channel identification labels and physiological numeric data. The electronics used a 68000 processor with several 68000 peripherals (DUART, MFP and PI/T) as well as a Real Time Clock. -
Manager, Electronics & Firmware DevelopmentWestrex Oem Products Aug 1981 - Oct 1984Fall River, Massachusetts, United StatesDeveloped electronic controller boards for printers. The electronics included communications interfaces (Parallel & Serial), microprocessor (6502), motor drives (DC), impact printhead solenoid drives, sensor interfaces and power supplies. Promoted to lead a small team of electronics and firmware engineers to develop the control electronics for impact printing cash register mechanisms and 80 column computer printers. Developed ASIC to reduce the cost of the electronics.
