Senior EngineerShort Term Contracts Mar 2009 - Oct 2010Short Term ContractsFollowing a year of independent travel and 2 years work in the US I returned to the UK during the start of the economic downturn. During this period I worked several temporary contracts ranging from 3 to 7 months. Below are details of some of the projects that I worked on during this time.Crane Support Systems – Design of numerous crane beams and support systems for new installations, existing buildings and investigating the possibility of uprating existing cranes. Designs carried out using BS 2573, BS 5950 and BS 2853.Northampton General Hospital, Haematology Unit Refurb and Extension – Design of two storey extension to existing Haematology Unit set in a confined site. Design with steel, masonry and concrete. Using BS 5950, BS 8110 and BS 5628.Multiple Timber Fame Buildings – Detailed design and drawing of timber framed building for residential and commercial use. Design carried out in accordance with BS 5268.Domestic Structural Alterations and Extensions – Analysis and design in timber, masonry, steel and concrete for various domestic projects. Using BS 5950, BS 8110 BS 5268 and BS 5628.

Structural EngineerArup 2006 - 2008Below are some of the projects I was involved in during my time at Arup USA.Songdo New City, Korea – Schematic design and design development of a complex shopping centre and 2 pedestrian bridges in steel, designed in accordance with IBC 2006 and AISC’s LRFD Code. Also, conceptual design of a multi use flat slab concrete framed building, designed to ACI 318’M’.Carnegie Mellon University, School of Computer Science Complex, Pittsburgh – new 9 storey computer science complex on a considerably sloped site. Main involvement was in the design of the concrete (retaining walls, beams, slabs) and steel elements (beams, bridge landing platforms). Steel design was carried out to the AISC LRFD Code and concrete to ACI 318.Marina Bay Sands, Singapore - Conceptual and schematic design of a variety of different areas of this huge project, including conceptual design of a 60m long cantilever end section of the “sky park” which linked three hotel towers, and schematic design of the convention centre and the below ground podium area. Designed using British Standards to satisfy IBC 2006.Al Reem Island Central Park Parking Lot, Abu Dhabi – Conceptual and schematic design of a 3 storey parking garage below the central park. I managed the project and attended the schematic design level meetings before handing over to a colleague. Main challenges with the scheme were counteracting the buoyancy issues associated with the 11m head of water and supporting the 2m of fill and low rise buildings to the park above. -
Structural EngineerWhite Young Green Jul 2003 - Mar 2006Below are some of the projects I was involved in during my time at White Young Green.Thomas Danby College Community Sports Centre – Responsible for the design and management of this £2.8M project from tender to completion. My role included all aspects of the structural design, as well as coordination of the other engineering elements of the project.Hatfield Visual Arts College – I undertook the design of all structural elements and coordinated input from the drainage and highways departments for a new two storey, steel framed arts block and adjoining single storey Information Technology block.Education Leeds, PFI Schools – Design manager of 3 of 10 new build primary schools. In addition to design, my role as manager was to co-ordinate the design inputs on structures, drainage and highways with the Architect and Contractor.Castle Donington, Surface Water Pumping Station - Design of a large underground reinforced concrete pumping station (in an area with very high water table) and ancillary structures, such as reinforced concrete manholes, culvert inlets and outfalls. Designed using BS 8007 and BS8110.Various Refurbishment Projects – Building surveys and inspections, analysis and design of the structural aspects of the refurbishments.
