Helping to conduct research into the complete replacement of cement with fly ash in concrete. Fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal, while having some uses over a third of all fly ash is discarded into dry landfills. By using fly ash to completely replace cement, costs to produce concrete could be drastically reduced especially when producing ultra-high performance concrete.

Over the summer I assisted the Operations staff and also performed duties related to Estimating and Construction. I helped put together a Structures Equipment inventory for the Structures Manager, and also spent time on the Lambert Airport project compiling a list of axle load ratings on concrete batch trucks for the Paving Manager. I also compiled a summary of existing bridge condition ratings for the large I-270 Design/Build project, and helped build production history spreadsheets that will help the Estimating Department to accurately bid future projects.
