Undertook my Certificate of Malting Competence and gained a pass in upper quartile. Running of a busy malting laboratory from barley intake through to final malted barley product. Harvest sample analysis including bidding on spot samples as required. Responsible for harvest intake and ensuring quick analysis is backed up with recommended industry methods as necessary. Being part of the SMMG to evaluate new crop trials from SVT, NL1 & NL2 trials including full micro-malting to finished analysis. Training laboratory staff in analytical methods to ensure all analysis is carried out to industry standards and Good Lab Practices. Stand in for production manager and site manager within an on call rota. Make changes to production based on analysis as required, e.g. steeping schedules, germination sprays and kilning cycles. Looking after laboratory budget, purchasing all chemicals for laboratory. Research and development of new techniques.

Analysis of barley at intake through to production of malted barley. Routing QC of malted barley through production. Analysis of final product including HWE, CWE, DU/DP, Nitrogen, TSN, Colour, GN, Viscosity, Gravity & fermentation. Discharge samples monitored to keep within SEPA regulations. Effluent samples monitored to ensure effective treatment plant operations. Microbiology carried out for TVC & E-Coli, Barley samples analysed by INFRARED and Dumas for nitrogen and moisture. Barley samples checked for size, variety and contamination.
