This worked in synergy with the parent medical insurance business, winning/retaining annual premiums. Grew the team from nothing to over 50 people including physiologists, IT developers, service designers and governance. We delivered a data-driven, results orientated service that is about sustained engagement, intervention and genuine health outcomes such as lower blood pressure and improved HbA1c through understanding and behaviour change. -

We use automated activity and weight monitoring to feed information to our adative learning system, which in turn coaches people to change their behaviour.Over 3 trials we have demonstrated that the system increases activity by over 2 hours per week, weight loss is up to 2 lb a week and engagement over 80% after 3 months (vs web norm of 40-50%).A result of 5 years research and a further 2 years commercial development, the MiLife system is the only health behaviour change system proven to change lifestyles in a large population leading to the improvement in important health measures.As founder I raised the venture capital and covered multiple roles (finance, operations, sales, marketing) until they were recruited for. CTO Ogi Bataveljic joined me from Unilever and led the development effort for the business and supported the raising of capital. CEO Ciaran McCourt joined the team in 2007 after the sale of his very successful eDiets UK business to Tesco to create Tescodiets.The business secured several key customers including the NHS.

My role within Unilever Corporate Research was to identify and enable opportunities created by new science, both to the existing core business and to create radically new businesses. To achieve this it was necessary to balance process & discipline in managing the capability flow with the need to give scientists freedom to find the truly valuable ideas. The resulting process was similar to a venture model, accepting that not all technologies will be of value, but establishing clear criteria (e.g. value, fit, practical implementation) and tracking progress.This was as much a culture-change and educational activity as it was procedural. On one hand I was supporting the R&D teams to think commercially, and on the other hand selling operationally credible concepts to investors and core business managers.I reported to SVP Natraj, who in turn reported to Unilever CEO Patrick Cescau. -
