I qualified all aspects for a high-volume manufacturing ready process. I did everything from interacting with suppliers, health and safety and chemical delivery to obtain slurry and consumables to experiment with. I designed experiments, wrote work orders for technicians and often ran the experiments myself in the fab. I learnt about all aspects of the CMP equipment in order to make optimal use of it, from flow rates to pressure, speed, endpointing, cleaning etc. I was lucky to be mentored by my boss’ boss who was the equipment expert at the time. He personally mentored my team of four to five as well as my direct manager twice a week on all aspects of the CMP process. I collected and presented data to my seniors regularly, wrote specifications to document the process details, developed best-known methods for this process including response flow charts, as well as whitepapers to qualify the process. I did cost analysis, set up statistical process control charts and limits, created test water routes and set up automation. I have some experience with editing .jsl and .sql scripts for pulling data. I qualified six new product introductions. This new process is 60% cheaper in price per wafer, 3x faster run rate, 5x reduction in post-polish defects and 50% better topography compared to the previously established process. I won three awards in that time, and having reached the milestone of implementing the new process I left Intel to pursue my scientific passions, but I’m excited to work in industry again.
