I’m a Professor of English at the College of Charleston, where I also direct our Writing, Rhetoric, and Publication program. My teaching, research, and editing is motivated by my commitment to help writers at all levels tell their stories and reach their audiences.I teach undergraduate courses in academic writing, literacy studies, editing, document design, and technical writing. I also teach our department’s internship class. Although I adapt each course to respond to its learning objectives and target audience, I stress experiential learning in all the classes I teach and design experiences that help students explore and realize their career goals.My research seeks to understand the academic, social, and professional transitions undergraduates experience throughout their time in college. Whether I’m conducting ethnographic research, a longitudinal study, or a network analysis, my central aim as a writing researcher is to learn from students’ understanding of their experiences and to use that knowledge to develop writing classes and curricula that help all students learn. I am a founding editor of the open-access journal Literacy in Composition Studies, where I collaborate with other editorial team members to help publish multidisciplinary research in writing and literacy studies. When I’m not teaching, writing, or editing, I listen to all the music I can, play old-time clawhammer banjo, and am learning about stamp collecting and postal history.
