Appeals and Reviews Sub-Committee

Leads the department responsible for investigating the fitness to practise of the social services workforce in Scotland, presenting Hearings to fitness to practise panels and defending appeals to the Sheriff Court.

Lead operational role in ensuring compliance with legal, information governance and corporate governance responsibilities. Contributing to the operational management of 290 members of staff and developing key strategies in areas of corporate governance and information governance for an organisation with a turnover of approx. £15 million and which processes personal and special category data of 167,000 workers nationally.

Responsible for the line management of a team of solicitors and investigators who investigate allegations that impair workers fitness to practise in social services. Responsible for the presentation of cases to Fitness to Practise Panels. Responsible for defending decisions subject to appeal at the Sheriff Court.

Specialised in pursuer reparation, including personal injury, contract disputes and property disputes. Had an active role within the pursuer team and appear regularly in the Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland. Principally acted for pursuers in a variety of reparation actions arising from road traffic accidents including credit hire, personal injury and general vehicle damage. Also acted for pursuers in actions involving a variety of property and contractual disputes. Responsible for the settlement of hundreds of cases. During my traineeship I spent a seat within our Edinburgh office within the Litigation department. I assisted with high value and complex cases within the Court of Session with a particular emphasis on complex personal injury actions. The skills I learned during this seat gave me an excellent introduction to the type of actions I would be handling within the Insurance Department. I also have the benefit of a secondment to a large public sector body in which I assisted with the renewable energy work that they carried out.
