As an Operations Officer, I work as part of a 6 man shift system who man the Operations desk providing 24/7 coverage. The main responsibility of the role is to monitor the functionality of Aids to Navigation (Lighthouses, Buoys, Beacons etc.) to ensure the safety of Mariners around the Coasts of the UK. This is done via a mixture of software and a close relationship with the various Coast Guards (telephone reporting). Once a fault has been identified, it is the responsibility of the Operations Officers to ensure that the correct people are notified within a set time frame and that more importantly, the Mariner are notified so as to be prepared.During week days this monitoring is confined to England and Wales. However, at weekends and Night times we take over the monitoring of all the Scottish and Irish Aids too. All of this is done via an array of 14 Screens. In the event of any ship sinking around the coast it is our duty to liaise with Coast Guard, Hydrographer and Secretary of State Representative to ensure that any potential hazard to navigation is marked and handled accordingly. The decision as to whether a wreck site requires marking is down to the Director of Navigational Requirements of Trinity London so a close working relationship is maintained with him also.As the role requires lone working at nights, the ability to think on ones feet and make decisions is paramount. Attention to detail combined with working under pressure, makes for a very challenging and rewarding role.

I was in charge of formatting and updating Operating Instructions for Lighthouses, to bring them in line with Trinity House Standards. This work envolved an in depth working knowledge of Microsoft Word. As well as this I was responsible for scanning and indexing historical drawings into an electonic archive. Other duties included making orders for printing supplies, and sourcing quotes from outside companys for ad hoc printing jobs.

As a marine administrator my main duty was to collect, scan and format data in an Excel spreadsheet. The purpose of this was to populate a database of parts for our three vessels, in preparation for the implementation of a new planned maintenance software. This work involved prioritisation of workloads and contacting outside bodies for information on parts, which often meant juggling more than one task at a time. During this time used excel extensively as well as PDF cracking software.
