About Chris Wright

I care about care leavers, and celebrating their success. I’m ’the care leaver guy’ at Suffolk County Council’s Virtual School & College.I created and work with a bunch of incredible people on a passion project I call ‘The Family Business’; an innovative employment model supporting care leavers access employment opportunities. The Family Business is Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Virtual School’s proclamation to our care leavers that we care about them and want them to succeed in employment. Through this groundbreaking employment model, The Family Business readies care leavers for work, creates meaningful work-based opportunities, and continues to support them after securing work.As any good parent would behave, we use our vast network across the county to create employment opportunities for our care leavers. I refer to these willing-and-able partners as ‘community parents’; employers across all sectors heeding our call to action. Please contact me to learn more about The Family Business and to see if we can support you to adopt this vital work in your own local authority.

Post-18 Lead - Virtual School

Current

Ipswich, England, United Kingdom

Nov 2020 - Present

Education, Skills, And Employment Lead

Ipswich, United Kingdom

I'm the education lead and part of the EET Support Team sitting within the Leaving Care Service, formerly the Catch22 16+ Leaving Care Service. I monitor and work with children in care (CiC) and care leavers county-wide to address those not in education, employment, and training (NEET). Within my role I work alongside and am responsible for facilitating a multi-agency approach where other services open to young people are made available to them to give them the best options for their education or employment. I have co-designed and lead on the 'Pathway to EET' plans that we have produced exclusively for Suffolk County Council.

Neet Support Worker - 'Future Focus'

Ipswich, United Kingdom

I work closely with Children in Care (CiC) and care leavers who are NEET (not in education, employment, or training) within the 16+ Leaving Care Service and monitor the progression and data of over 200 young people. By working in a multi-agency environment, I address the issues surrounding their education status and work holistically to positively engage them in opportunities with provisions ranging from college to bespoke providers targeting specific learning needs. I maintain an up-to-date roster of local providers to cater for a diverse range of needs who work with me to support my young people and give them the best chance of achieving and retaining full-time education, training, or employment. In recent months I have become more involved in multi-agency practice surrounding offenders with meetings being held at MAPPA level and close joint work between myself and the public protection unit (PPU).

Through the Colchester Housing Intervention Project (CHIP), I work with troubled and vulnerable families in order to turn their lives around and provide an effective and sustainable relationship between services and users. By professionally and earnestly counselling service users, we pinpoint aspects of their lives to work on in order to provide a greater foundation for them to get back on their feet. This was a temporary role from a budget saving from my previous role, leading in to the opportunity with the 16+ Leaving Care Service.

I work closely with 'crisis families' where succinct and explicit support is required across the whole family. As a small team, we facilitate change through focused work with family members, getting them to understand and confront the issues at the core of their struggles, and guide them towards creating a better life for themselves and those around them.
