I completed the Howarth & Smith Oxford-Cambridge Fellowship, which gives outstanding law graduates of the University of Oxford or Cambridge an opportunity to spend nine months in Los Angeles experiencing U.S. trial law in the context of high-stakes litigation. The purpose of the program is to expose Fellows to new styles of written and oral advocacy which they can then import into their practices back in the UK. As the first Fellow to be a licensed legal practitioner in the U.S. (New York) prior to starting the Fellowship, I was given responsibilities equivalent to that of a first year associate. I was admitted pro hac vice basis in several cases and appeared in court both led and un-led in that capacity.

I was employed by Oxford University Press to run debating workshops in schools abroad as part of a wider project to raise awareness about the importance of free and critically informed debate in education. My responsibilities included recruiting, training and managing those that would deliver the workshops alongside me, authoring a teaching manual to ensure that all workshops were run to the same high standard, and soliciting feedback from schools and using that feedback to improve the workshops. I ultimately ran workshops in schools in the UAE, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Egypt and Jordan.

This competition is the largest mooting competition of its kind in the UK, open to all students enrolled in tertiary education. The competition started in May 2018, and the final took place in early January 2019. The grand final moot problem concerned breach of confidence and public immunity interest and was presided over by a full Court of Appeal, including Lord Justice Hickinbottom, Lady Justice Nicola Davies and Lord Justice Green. I spent five months working at the UNDP’s Regional Office in Amman, Jordan, during which I organised the Arab States launch of the 2018 State of the World’s Volunteerism Report. I drafted concept notes for panels, invited speakers, authored the official supplemental document distributed to the Executive Directors of 28 UN Agencies, and assisted with communication and logistical efforts. As a result of my work in Jordan, I was subsequently contracted to support the UN Forum on Sustainable Development in Geneva in March 2019, during which I wrote the speech given by the UN Volunteers Regional Manager, and I authored the UNV’s outcome report for the event.

Founded in 1823, the Oxford Union is the largest society at the University of Oxford and the most prestigious society in the world. We have hosted world leaders in every field, including US Presidents Reagan, Nixon and Carter, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Malcolm X, Diego Maradona, Sir Elton John and Morgan Freeman, to name but a few. I had the privilege of leading the Society for six months, from June until December 2017.As President, I was responsible for a £1 million pound budget, as well as the running of the Society's debates, individual addresses, bar and library. My work was split between the vacation and the term: during the vacation, I put together the term's seven debates, individual addresses, the ball and various socials, and, specific to my term as President, the planning for our annual membership drive. I was also active in shaking up how the Society approaches our Press and PR strategy, and how we best increase accessibility at the society.The position demanded strong organisational skills. I had to ensure every guest speaker that passed through the door had the most enjoyable time possible, and I wanted to ensure my committee had a positive experience too. Day-to-day, this meant sending out hundreds of emails to organise the logistics for every event (including the press), chairing the seven debates, and interviewing the speakers that would come to give individual addresses. Additionally, the first two weeks of term required a lot of work spearheading our membership drive.Overall, my term had the most events in the Union's history - 57 events over 8 weeks. Speakers I interviewed include Gordon Brown, Kevin Rudd, Monica Lewinsky, Jeffrey Sachs, Anthony Scaramucci, Fatou Bensouda, JJ Abrams, Sir Ian McKellen, Emeli Sandé, Senator Orrin Hatch, Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau, Tom Daley, the Presidents of Iceland, Austria, and the Republic of Northern Macedonia, Eric Holder, Kathryn Ruemmler, and David Rubinstein.
