Solution Designer/Etl Team LeadMlc Mar 2008 - Apr 2010Melbourne, Victoria, AuMLC continued to leverage the strategic platform I helped put in place 2 years prior for the AML and TopGear projects. These projects added subject areas and data marts for customer and sales analysis and reporting. The AML project was started in response to the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act and required MLC to perform name matches and scan for suspicious financial transactions. Although these activities were performed further downstream, this project enabled the organisation’s customer data to be integrated into the data warehouse.Project TopGear was designed to produce detailed analytics on the sales of MLC’s investment and insurance products across its distribution channels. My role at MLC was to design and develop the ETL process that loaded data from 14 source systems into the data warehouse. At the peak, I managed 6 ETL developers across 2 projects. I was responsible for writing the design specification and the detailed designs for the more complex pieces of work. In addition, I spent a portion of my time developing the code to assist in meeting tight timelines set for the project. -
Etl Team LeadVero Aug 2006 - Jan 2008Brisbane, Qld, AuThe Vero data warehousing environment was created to facilitate both strategic and operational reporting on Claims Handling. From various claim management systems, the data was extracted using DataStage and stored in a dimensional model in a DB2 database. From this database, the data was delivered to users through the Cognos 8 Suite. The first phase of the project was delivered just prior to my arrival. As the requirements for the next phase were analysed and documented, I was tasked with tuning the ETL jobs delivered in the prior phase. As a result, I achieved a 50% time reduction in the overnight processing. As soon as the requirements were ready, I performed high level estimation for the design, development and test of the ETL. Subsequently, I designed the changes to the schema, wrote the Detailed ETL Design and allocated the work between the ETL team members (myself included). The work was completed ahead of schedule and with very few defects. My other roles in the project were assisting in a DataStage version upgrade, knowledge transfer between team members, writing and enforcing development standards and further performance/process improvements. -
Datastage ConsultantVodafone Apr 2006 - Aug 2006London, GbProgram SAM was a project to migrate billing and customer data between Vodafone’s old and new billing and CRM systems. IBM WebSphere DataStage was used to extract/read the extracted data from the source and load to the Oracle ‘staging form’ database for the transformation and reconciliation of the data. DataStage then extracts and formats the data for its load into the target systems. This process was being carried out for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. My primary role in Program SAM was to design and develop the solution for the incremental or Delta loading of the data following the main Data Migration. The subsequent Delta loads ensure that data that was changed while the migration step occurred was migrated. This solution consisted of a combination of DataStage jobs and SQL scripts. -
Data Warehouse ConsultantMlc Dec 2004 - Apr 2006Melbourne, Victoria, AuIn response to both internal and external reporting requirements, MLC undertook a project to create a Financial Data Warehouse (FDW). The source data, extracted largely from Oracle Financials ERP system, is transformed and loaded using IBM WebSphere DataStage. The data warehouse data is stored in an Oracle database and delivered to users via Cognos ReportNet.While at MLC, I was responsible for the design, development and testing of all ETL processes loading, and controlling and reconciling the load into the FDW in both stages of the project. During the design phase, I had a large role in the design and implementation of the data warehouse schema. During the build phase, my time was divided between developing the DataStage solution and managing and mentoring two junior developers (work allocation and estimation, quality assurance on their deliverables and knowledge transfer). In addition, I was involved in the installation and configuration of DataStage (on AIX) and MetaStage (on AIX and Windows) in this environment. -
Data Warehouse ConsultantHarvey Norman Feb 2004 - Dec 2004Homebush West, Nsw, AuThe Harvey Norman data warehouse environment provides both operational and strategic reporting for upper management and product co-ordinators. The data is extracted from proprietary point of sale and sales management systems, transformed and loaded to the DB2 database using Informatica PowerCenter. The users, numbering approximately 100, are delivered the content using the Cognos reporting suite. While at Harvey Norman, I was solely responsible for the delivery of all reporting solutions (multi-dimensional cubes and transactional reporting) from the data warehouse, as well as the associated administration and infrastructure. In this role, I performed analysis, design and development on new reporting components, including supporting database structures. Owing to my background in ETL products, I was also called upon to do development and changes to Harvey Norman’s ETL processes. Some of my other main duties were implementing a security profile across the Cognos reporting applications, developing an improved batch processing mechanism and planning and performing the installation of the new Cognos Production server. -
Data Warehouse ConsultantQueensland Department Of Transport May 2003 - Feb 2004Brisbane, Qld, AuQueensland Department of Transport has a data warehouse environment encompassing (but not exclusive to) driver licensing, vehicle registrations and infringements. The data is extracted, transformed and loaded with IBM WebSphere DataStage, stored in an Oracle 9i database, and delivered through Cognos web products to approximately 250 users.I was the lead technical analyst for a data warehouse project to incorporate driver examinations and vehicle inspections into the data warehouse. In this capacity, I was required to do business and source system analysis, data modelling, high level and low level design (for the ETL and Business Intelligence delivery). I was also responsible for the development of one of the three data marts of this project. My biggest personal achievement was the development of a fast and flexible mechanism for gathering performance statistics from DataStage. This enabled smarter administration of the ETL processing. In addition, as an external consultant, I was called on to be a DataStage mentor to the permanent staff. -
Data Warehouse ConsultantBritish Broadcasting Corporation (Bbc) Mar 2002 - May 2003London, England, GbThe BBC uses in-house systems to manage their television, radio and internet operations. They perform operational reporting on these systems to fulfil their internal and regulatory reporting requirements. While employed by the BBC, I was responsible for the operational reporting from these business critical systems and Cognos Impromptu reporting on these sources was in use by about 100 business users in both radio and television. My role incorporated the day-to-day maintenance of the reporting and the analysis, design and development of new reporting solutions. In addition, I was frequently called upon to apply my knowledge of database operations for the BBC’s software development teams. On projects varying in size and scope, I performed data modelling, development of stored procedures and DTS jobs in SQL Server 2000 for a range of business functions. -
Data Warehouse ConsultantAnglo Coal Australia Sep 2000 - Feb 2002AuAnglo Coal Australia uses their data warehouse to perform consolidated reporting on financial, human resource, mining operations and marketing data from the 5 coal mines operating throughout Queensland and New South Wales. From MIMS, and other industry-specific packages, the data was extracted, manipulated and loaded into an Oracle database using DataStage. The users were delivered the content using the Cognos suite of business intelligence applications. My first task was to investigate a mechanism to replace or automate an existing labour-intensive manual reporting process. This was achieved by automating the Cognos toolset using OLE automation. On completion of the solution, I travelled to each of the mines to educate the end users and customise the product further (where required) for each individual.Subsequently, I alternated between provided second level support and undertaking short-term development tasks. One of my ongoing responsibilities was to maintain an in-house Visual Basic program used to input required information not already captured in any of the company’s systems into the data warehouse. In addition, during the Cognos software upgrade performed while I was there, I had roles involving software installation and upgrade and testing of software components.
