Production Engineering at Facebook is a hybrid between software and systems engineering; it keeps Facebook running smoothly and scaling efficiently. The Production Engineering team works within Facebook’s product and infrastructure teams to make sure our services are reliable and scalable. The team writes code and debugs hard problems in live production that impact more than 2 billion people around the world.I managed the Network Systems Production Engineering teams, where we worked on the software that helps design, deploy, control, monitor, and analyze the entire Facebook network – from data centers connecting the servers to each other, the software stack powering our switches we built in-house, to our backbone connecting people using Facebook around the globe. Traditional networking doesn't work at Facebook's scale, it takes a lot of specialized software and systems to make our network work.

I built and led a team responsible for the engineering and operations of public and private cloud services. We were responsible for software engineering, infrastructure automation and engineering, network engineering, and data center selection, negotiation, and operations.We built and operated one of the largest object storage clouds in the world, as well as an IaaS compute platform and a SaaS monitoring platform, with an automation-first mindset. From automating the provisioning of bare-metal compute, network, and storage systems, to the testing, deployment, and management of our software stack, we reliability built and operated a multi-exabyte global storage cloud with a team of less than 200.

My team architected, engineered, implemented, and operated ESPN's broadcast, corporate, and wireless networks, voice communications systems, and collaboration technologies as well as supporting large remote production events like the X Games.We provided the network infrastructure for ESPN's Bristol, LA, Austin, Charlotte, Washington, DC and several international studios and production facilities, multiple data centers, and the enterprise workplace environment. We were responsible for enterprise-wide voice systems and VC/collaboration technology.

(transitioned to HP as part of their acquisition of EDS)Worked on a variety of domestic and international client engagements, including leading a data center construction, migration, and consolidation project for BellSouth; an assessment of Bouygues Telecom’s (France) service management processes and tools; a 40% reduction in server footprint for ABN AMRO (Netherlands) as data center consolidation leader.As the Chief Technologist for the US Telecommunications Industry group, provided technical leadership and direction, fostering relationships with customer executives and creating technology solutions.In the public sector, worked designing a number of large infrastructure and software deals (DoD, US Army, Department of Health and Human Services, and NASA) as part of the Strategic Sales Center, as well as a leading the infrastructure and architecture for a large data center construction and migration project in the national security space.

I formed and managed an architecture team to define technical standards and provide engineering to the growing e-commerce operations center. Responsible for creating designs for multi-million dollar projects, including the bellsouth.com web site and e-commerce environment, as well as the Cingular/BellSouth Mobility online store.Got my first taste for high-scale systems through engineering the Cingular online store to support the company's launch during the 2001 Superbowl.

Responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of a southeastern regional ISP network supporting over 30,000 dial-up, dedicated access and web hosting customers. Wore lot of hats, from negotiating with telecom suppliers to writing our customer provisioning system and ACH billing software.
