About Chris Calwell
I focus on transformative changes to how and why we use energy. The constraints climate places on our fossil fuel use are fundamental and absolute, so I seek opportunities to utterly break our reliance on them through zero net energy buildings, renewable energy sources, wisely sited and scaled energy storage, efficient plug loads, and electric transportation options. In practice, this means finding alternatives to energy efficiency business as usual -- new ways of measuring and specifying product energy consumption and performance, promoting and incentivizing the best performers, and ensuring products operate as efficiently as intended. It also means recommending bidirectionally charged EVs in lieu of dedicated stationary storage in most cases, because the economics and storage capacity are more compelling.I'm increasingly active in the clean tech and biotech investing fields as well. It's a distinct twist on socially responsible investing that advocates not merely for avoiding the stocks of coal, oil and tobacco companies, but diligently seeking out those companies that are innovating and deploying the most revolutionary solutions. Most of what passes for ESG investing today involves passive screens for the most egregiously bad activities and products, and yields largely similar portfolios full of MSFT, AAPL, AMZN and other large cap companies that only devote a modest portion of their business activities to solving climate change. I'm more interested in the companies that exist solely to solve that problem, and who may not yet be on the radar of most investors.
Listed skills include Energy Efficiency, Solar Energy, Teaching, Data Visualization, and 5 others.

Adjunct Professor
CurrentMy International Renewable Energy Policy and Science graduate course teaches how, why and where the various types of renewable energy resources are making an impact on our world, and which policy and program mechanisms do the best job of accelerating that transition. It's been gratifying to see the students from my past courses head out into diverse and compelling careers all across the world, making a positive impact in ways I could never imagine.
Principal
CurrentI lead research into the consumer energy technologies, policies and market strategies most likely to reverse climate change. This includes teaching in-person and online courses for electric utilities regarding residential energy storage and electric vehicles (particularly V2G applications). I also investigate new approaches to consumer product testing and measurement that most realistically characterize their performance and energy use.
Fulbright Specialist
Conducted efficiency, performance, cost effectiveness and safety research into competing residential energy storage systems at CSIRO’s laboratory. Now utilizing those findings to help inform US policies and programs associated with energy storage technologies.
Senior Research Fellow
Led research team's efforts to propose new work in the areas of consumer electronics, zero net energy homes, renewables, climate change, and appliances. Established new conceptual approaches with regard to progressive efficiency and sufficiency on behalf of US and European clients. Innovated new ways of measuring and characterizing clothes dryer efficiency to emphasize more realistic operating conditions and energy savings estimates. Taught classes on occupant behavior and plug load aspects of zero net energy homes on behalf of the California utilities.
Founder And Vice President Of Policy & Research
Co-founded company with three partners and served as its initial President during the start-up phase. As utility business expanded and west coast offices began to hire staff, I shifted my focus to my subject matter expertise in residential lighting, consumer electronics, and appliances. Led company's technical and public policy research efforts on behalf of government, utility, and non-profit clients to develop new approaches to improving the energy efficiency of consumer products. Sold company to Advantage IQ in 2009, after which the name of the combined firm changed to Ecova.

Co-founded the California Compact with the California utilities and LBNL to accelerate sales of compact fluorescent lighting in the US market. Co-founded the Recycled Paper Coalition with major corporate buyers and recyclers of paper products. Conducted key early research at NRDC on climate change, automotive fuel economy, and actions consumers can take to improve environmental quality.
