After going public in 2021 with valuation ~$1.6B, Pear ran out of funding in 2023 while trying to pioneer prescription & payment models in the fledgling PDT industry. My role included the following:• Headed transformation of Pear's data resources for scale, advanced analytics, and machine learning.• Managed data engineering and data science teams. Healthsense was a startup that applied technology to predict the onset of adverse conditions related to the health and wellness of seniors. Wireless sensors measured personal behaviors, environmental conditions, biological signals, and other aspects of daily living. This information was analyzed by automated algorithms to gain actionable insight into emerging health conditions. Clinical staff and case workers were alerted to intervene when appropriate. My role included the following:• Involved with all system design decisions including algorithms, data science, IoT, software architecture, data flows, customer interfaces, and product features.• Wrote extensive software implementing the product. This included mathematical algorithms, real-time data flows, business logic, and user interfaces.• Researched machine learning approaches to assessing health risk from sensor data.• Oversaw a small team of software developers who coordinated with clinical experts and DevOps/IT. During this time, Aware’s communications technology division exclusively focused on the products that I helped spearhead, which optimized and made predictions for communication networks. I was head of engineering for this division. We automated measurements from broadband devices (consumer modems, central office equipment, and mobile test equipment), aggregated big data, and applied sophisticated algorithms. This allowed providers to maximize the customer reach, improve service quality, and minimize operational costs. My role included the following:• Oversaw the engineering organization consisting of small teams of software engineers, algorithm/data scientists, QA, IT, and field engineers.• Deeply involved with high-level architecture and day-to-day technical issues. Helped spearhead a product development effort at Aware that went from exploratory R&D with virtually no revenue to a wide product line generating annual revenues in the millions. This new product category involved diagnosing, optimizing, and making predictions to improve the health and profitability of broadband communication networks. My role included the following:• Led a team of PhD and Masters-level engineers and computer scientists to develop core algorithms, software, and embedded firmware. Routinely wrote production code, developed embedded data collection firmware, and devised critical algorithms concurrently with leadership responsibilities.• Researched and developed machine learning and signal processing algorithms, including detection and identification of physical faults and interferers, prediction of data rates for both real and hypothetical scenarios, and joint optimization of multiple interfering communication links.• Instituted Agile development methods (e.g., Scrum and XP), which significantly increased transparency of projects to customers and internal product teams. Tracked productivity/success metrics for all projects. Instituted processes for software source code control, project documentation, code reviews, bug/feature tracking, regression testing, routine performance testing, continuous integration, and test-driven development. My role included the following:• Generated novel intellectual property for digital communication systems based on adaptive signal processing and other mathematical algorithms. Contributed to innovations in multicarrier modulation, a foundation of modern cellular and Wi-Fi communications.• Solely architected and implemented the physical layer processing for an Intel DSL modem entirely in assembly language on a multi-core DSP board. Improved DSP hardware architecture to increase demodulator efficiency by a factor of two.• Developed embedded code implementing a mostly-software DSL modem for SigmaTel, including training algorithms and data pump. Simulated end-to-end performance in Matlab.• Wrote embedded DSP code and traveled worldwide to integrate with customers.(additionally held title of Senior Engineer)
