Chris Estes is a professional Landscape Architect and licensed General Contractor. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Environmental Design and is the president and owner of Estes Design, Inc. and Anglesy Construction in Charlotte NC. Mr. Estes specializes in Storm water infiltration and pervious concrete pavement, services, green infrastructure & regulatory compliance. Mr. Estes began his career designing, constructing and researching some of the first urban stream & wetland restoration projects in North Carolina. He went on to publish his field research with the Journal of American Water Resource Association. Through research and field experience with urban stream systems it became obvious how profound impervious watershed modifications degraded stream morphology and quality, as well ground water levels.Mr. Estes designed and researched the first multi-family pervious concrete (PC) parking system in NC and the first private and public (PC) lots in Kentucky. Mr. Estes assisted North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources revise Chapter 18 of the NC BMP Manual, “Permeable Pavement” and continues to work with regulatory commissions to revise and update Low Impact Development standards.Education: University of GeorgiaWork/Study Here & Abroad: - Soil Bioengineering, Rutgers University - Wildland Hydrology, Rosgen Level IV stream restoration, Pagosa Springs CO - Study of Danish Stream Restoration Practices West Jutland, Denmark; - U.K. Stream Restoration Sites, Norfolk, England - Hutchinson’s Tip Hazardous Waste Site Reclamation, Manchester England - Newbury Hydraulics Stream Restoration, Ontario CanadaCertifications:Wetland Delineation Certification TrainingRosgen Level IV Certification, Pagosa Springs Co.NRMCA Pervious Concrete CertificationNorth Carolina General Contractor, UtilityPublications & Research: (selected) • "Reversing the History of Urban Hydrology", In Depth Research, Stormwater Magazine 2015• "Storm water Infiltration in Clay Soils", a Case Study in the North Carolina Piedmont, Storm Water

PresidentEstes Design Inc. Aug 2002 - PresentCharlotte, North Carolina AreaMr. Estes has worked in the Charlotte region for over 20 years. His passion is protecting our most important natural resources, air and water. Mr. Estes was a founding member of the N.C. Stream Hydrology Task Force which is now the N.C. Stream Restoration Institute. Mr. Estes was among the first in North Carolina to complete certification in Fluvial Geomorphological stream design resulting in completion of 7+ miles of urban stream restoration & enhancement in the Catawba River Basin. Combining knowledge of construction, hydrology and botany he introduced and implemented the first urban stream bio-engineering protocols in the NC Piedmont. This included work with the University of North Carolina Charlotte Biology department to introduce, for the first time, several original native species for stream bank stabilization. Continued collaboration with UNCC' s Dept of Geography and Earth Science has resulted in prominent research projects and publications in urban hydrology. Understanding the implicit relationship of urban watershed hydrology to the health, welfare and safety of our communities, Mr. Estes has advocated innovation in the synthesis of urban development and ecology through mimicking natural processes. Mr. Estes's research in Stormwater Infiltration in Clay Soils of the Piedmont assisted in a paradigm shift for urban stormwater design. Mr. Estes assisted in authoring the new N.C. standards as a committee member for the North Carolina Best Management Chapter 18 "Permeable Pavement" revisions published in 2012. Associated with his work Mr. Estes designed several firsts for the private development community including the first pervious concrete infiltration system in North Carolina in 2004, later studied by UNCC for 2 years, the first bio-infiltration system in North Carolina and the first 2 pervious concrete parking lot infiltration systems in Kentucky. He has traveled internationally to observe new water quality projects and programs.
