The D.O.O.R. International’s is a non-denominational ministry who's vision is to bring God’s Word and biblical Christian fellowship to Deaf communities worldwide.

Every other week, I meet with the entire high school assembly of Trinity Academy of Raleigh to discuss and think about a wide range of topics -- whether Apes deserve human rights, how we should treat the animals we eat, whether Luck is real, should science try to cure aging, etc. Sometimes we have guest speakers. Other times I use TED Talks to launch the topic. Being able to decide what you think about something new is an important skill to have before entering college, so Forum gives students practice questioning ideas, arguing with me and each other, and considering how what they've already embraced as truth bears on the topic at hand. Years ago, I was asked to teach a class on how to live out your faith in your workplace. Like many people, I find it hard to make my faith a relevant part in the area of life where I spend most of my time, so I felt this would be a good way to explore the challenge. I built the class around a set of virtues called the Fruit of the Spirit that can be found in Galatians 5:22. I found that these fruit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control can be authentically Christian AND highly effective in the workplace when practiced artfully. With the encouragement of the class and the support of Lanphier Press, I published Fruit at Work.

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities we have in our community is the education of our at-risk children. Kids who grow up in poverty or with family instability face huge challenges where their parents are often less engaged in their education (when a kid is assigned to a suburban school, their parents may have never even seen their school if they don't have a car), home can be a distraction from school work, and their may be little aspiration among their peers to go to college. For many years now, Communities in Schools has been a force among these kids and their neighborhoods. We've established learning centers near their homes where trained teachers can work with them after school and keep them at grade level while graduation coaches get to know them and their families to keep them encouraged and making progress.
