SaaS SMB IT. Continuum enables its Managed Services Provider (MSP) partners to backup, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain the IT infrastructure of SMB clients from a single pane of glass. Led a team of 180 engineers distributed across 3 continents. Coordinated cross functional team to build the first version of the Continuity247 hybrid cloud backup platform. The company employs over 1,000 professionals worldwide, supports over 3,500 partners and monitors over 650,000 endpoints.

SaaS SMB BI. Reporting to the CEO. Responsible for engineering and systems. InsightSquared is a SaaS business analytics app that grows revenue, profit and productivity for small or medium sized business by analyzing data from existing CRM and financial software to enable better data driven decisions. Perennial winner of Best Place to Work in Massachusetts. Our process was lean and agile with continuous deployment. Investors were Atlas, DFJ, NextView. Raised $27MM.

Founding VPE reporting to the CEO. Investment reporting and monitoring for financial advisors and their clients. Led offshore team to build prototype. Built the engineering team of 3. Wrote the Rails code that loads most of the $2B of investments that is tracked daily. Responsible for 24/7 system administration. Used an agile, lean startup process. Investors are Anthemis and angels.

Founding CTO. Mass customization of tween girl apparel. For under $200K built ecom site, a user experience loved by girls, integrated manufacturing workflow and inventory management. Led small tech team of 2.5. Built prototype in February solo, closed Series A in March, launched Alpha in July with release in September. Investors were New Atlantic and LaunchCapital.

SaaS online video engagement analysis. Managed engineering reporting to the CEO. Visible Measures aspired to be the Nielsen for web video with its pioneering video metrics platform. Adopted by MTV and other major media networks, several large video sharing sites, movie studios, and major brands to measure audience engagement and optimize monetization. Built big data (Hadoop) platform that could scale to analyze every person’s interaction with every video on the planet. Grew team from 4 developers to 16 domestic engineers plus a team in India. Investors were General Catalyst and Mohr Davidow. Raised $29MM.

Domain ecom and online media network. Responsible for engineering and systems. NameMedia was a rapidly growing, highly profitable, online media network and domain name marketplace company. NameMedia’s businesses were built around a portfolio of 700,000 domains, the largest private portfolio of domain names, which were augmented by an affiliate network of hundreds of thousands of domains. NameMedia’s media network of 100 vertical online channels and brands generated over 50MM monthly visits which made it a top 20 Internet site. NameMedia was the largest marketplace for buying and selling domain names. Did diligence for and integration of acquired companies. Grew team from 7 to 24 engineers. Investors included Highland, Summit, and Bank of America. Raised $175MM.

On-demand streaming media, SaaS pioneer. Founding CTO responsible for engineering and systems. Brainshark hosts on-demand streaming media presentations with self-service authoring, content management, distribution, tracking, and real time reporting. Built team of 19. Managed team through the dot bomb years with staff reductions to 5 and re-built to 14. Co-inventor for fundamental patent (6,968,506) for on-demand, user generated web presentations. Investors included Flagship and 3i. Raised $20MM.

Web traffic analytics. Reporting to the CEO, managed engineering. Grew the R&D team from 9 to 38 as the company grew revenue from $1MM to $10MM. Participated in formation and development of the corporate and product strategy that defined the eBusiness Intelligence (EBI) category. Scaled net.Analysis 20X and established net.Analysis as the technology leader in the EBI space. Investors included CRV, Flagship, Bessemer, and BankAmerica Ventures. As a restart, raised $29MM leading to a $1.2B IPO.

Managed document management engineering at the public Software 100 company which was the leading document management vendor with over 500,000 seats. Made key strategic contributions including entry into the Internet market, a transition to server-based architecture, negotiating a strategic relationship with Microsoft, the technical diligence of acquisition candidates, and improved internationalization of the product set. Grew the team from 40 to 75. Managed distributed development teams in Boston, Tallahassee, and Toronto.

Founded Working Set and grew it to a staff of 25 and sales of $3M. Working Set was a skunk works that focused on ground breaking database product development. Working Set built and licensed VAX SQL to Digital (and was later acquired by Oracle). VAX SQL was the fastest SQL product on the planet in the late 80's and early 90's. We also built one of the first two WYSIWYG report writers, CA-RET, which we sold to CA. And we built DataRamp, which enabled database access over the internet. Our clients included Digital, Oracle, Microsoft, Apple, Computer Associates, and INGRES. Working Set was acquired by PC Docs in 1996.
