About Chris Chapin
Chris Chapin has dedicated his career in art & design education to the positive influences artists and designers can have on the global community. Since Joining Kansas City Art Institute, he has led two design programs, developed transdisciplinary curricula across campus, designed a progressive new Product Design major, and led faculty through big institutional challenges. As creator and Founding Chair of Product Design at KCAI, Chris directs a program distinguished by its innovative collaborations with all disciplines on campus, industry professionals, research institutions, and community leaders. His program is further distinguished by a strong entrepreneurial emphasis empowering each graduate to create a sustainable career in creative innovation. Each of Chris’ ventures are aimed at preparing students to be powerful agents for change through the objects, systems and ventures they create. With deep experience in education leadership, curriculum development and assessment, Chris previously distinguished himself as a forward-thinking leader at Otis College of Art and Design and in the greater education community. He is a career educator with degrees from the Institute of Design at Illinois Tech and Texas A&M University’s College of Architecture. He has held lead creative posts in the private sector and served as managing principal of a multi-disciplinary design firm. Chris has held distinguished leadership roles in art and design education, has served on the Board of Directors of Kansas City Academy and City in Motion Dance School, and led as Chairman of the Board at the Metropolitan School of the Arts. He now serves on the Committee for Research and Advanced Studies at Keystone Innovation District, a non-profit created to bring together regional universities, philanthropic leaders, corporations, and entrepreneurs with the goal of planning, developing, and operating a creative, diverse, and thriving innovation community in downtown Kansas City.
