Pure Watercraft develops revolutionary electric powertrain systems for boats. With outstanding performance including expandable range options, near silent operation, zero generated emissions, and virtually no maintenance, this is a better than gas solution to boat propulsion.My role as Chief Technologist is to ensure technical excellence across all of our products, manage development of our outboard motors including providing individual contributions to the mechanical subsystems, support technical due diligence, manage the company's intellectual property portfolio, and lead special projects within the organization.Additionally, I led the transition from alpha prototype to beta pre-production system. This included complete redesign of the electric outboard motor, which featured a patented maintenance-free electric motor / gearbox unit that could be fully assembled and tested prior to integration with the outboard motor. The beta design of the electric outboard motor also included a Pure Watercraft developed motor controller and innovative DC power distribution system. A lot of technological innovation went into this system and I am proud to have been a part of the world-class team that developed it. My individual contributions included:- conception and mechanical/overall design of our 20+kW electric outboard motor- development of a high power density 30kW permanent magnet synchronous motor- mechanical design/architecture of a high power density 30kW motor controller- design and development of a high-speed precision planetary gear reduction drive- mechanical design of a 2-motor dynamometer for development testing of our powertrain

With outstanding performance including expandable range options, near silent operation, zero generated emissions, and virtually no maintenance, this is a better than gas solution to boat propulsion.I was the first outside hire at Pure Watercraft at a time when the company was pivoting from a 3-person team managing an outsourced development of a prototype all-electric speed boat to an ambitious plan to hire an in-house engineering team and develop an electric outboard motor system from scratch.My role as Director of Engineering was to develop a concept for an electric outboard motor system, create a plan for developing the system, and execute on that plan with an understaffed team and small budget. This included recruiting world-class engineers, helping define system requirements and architecture, establishing relationships with key suppliers, manage the company's intellectual property portfolio, and providing individual contributions to the mechanical subsystems.

Early hire to the engineering team, contributed in many different areas of engineering, product development, and recruiting. Some highlights include:- Development lead for hydrogen peroxide and RP-1 propellant tanks for New Shepard prototype suborbital launch vehicle.- Pathfinder for aluminum friction stir welded propellant tanks, now being used on New Shepard and New Glenn launch vehicles.- Developed solid rocket motor nozzle and support structure for New Shepard Crew Capsule Escape System- Developed hydraulically actuated drag brake system for New Shepard suborbital launch vehicle.- Promoter of Agile and Scrum for use in hardware teams.
