I am a structural engineer specialising in architectural engineering and building structures in the built environment. I have almost 20 years of experience designing buildings, from concept to completion and have led project teams on numerous large commercial, residential, retail and hospitality developments. Collaboration across disciplines is paramount to my approach and I believe that no design is truly successful unless all contributors and users are satisfied. I have driven the use of technology in the design office as a tool to work more efficiently, while stressing the need for a thorough first principles understanding of how things stand up. I am a vocal advocate of sustainable structural engineering and the need to change our approach to design to consider the impact of our choices on carbon emissions and the climate emergency. In this vein, I am passionate about the use of engineered mass timber as a structural material and increasing its use in buildings with the aim to make it a competitive alternative to the traditional choices of concrete, steel, aluminium and masonry. Douglas Adams wrote that the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42, but we are left wondering what the question should be. We need to make sure we ask our clients and collaborators the right questions, so that we can provide them with answers that suits their needs and expectations. The result is a design that is considered, efficient and elegant in its simplicity.
