    Trained as a chartered accountant, Chris graduated from The University of Auckland in 1971 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and was admitted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand in the same year. From 1971 to 1974 he worked in London as and audit manager for a mid-sized UK chartered accounting firm that specialized in the audit of mid-sized companies and charities. From 1974 to 1976 Chris worked in the audit division with Price Waterhouse before becoming a partner in the mid-sized international accountancy firm, Grant Thornton as an audit partner. He was a member of the firm's National Audit Task Force (with responsibility for technical development and training) and was the New Zealand firm’s representative on the Asia Pacific Audit Task Force. Chris was also responsible for advising small and mid-sized client businesses, specialising in strategic and business planning.
