OpenAQ runs a unique open-source data platform used by stakeholders around the world to fight air inequality. By filling a basic air quality data access gap, getting the data into the hands of people who can use it (such as scientists, advocates, policymakers, journalists, and app developers), and providing training on how to interpret and use the data to advocate for air pollution solutions, OpenAQ is addressing one of the biggest public health and human rights issues on the planet: air pollution is the #1 environmental factor in early deaths and contributes to many diseases. 99% of people worldwide are breathing polluted air, and low- and middle-income countries suffer from the highest levels of exposure. Reducing air pollution also reduces pollutants that are fueling the climate crisis.I provide strategic leadership; run operations; manage our small, yet mighty, team; oversee programming and services; and cultivate relationships that lead to greater collaboration between air quality stakeholders and to financial and in-kind support for our exceptional organization.

Supervised up to 9 professional program and communications staff at a well-respected, nonpartisan, membership-based environmental organization focused on advancing public policies to protect public health and the environment. Played a leadership role in creating and maintaining a transparent, empowering, and inclusive team culture across the organization. Hired and coached program staff, fostering high individual and team performance and ensuring accountability and a learning environment. Shepherded development of OEC’s strategic plan and worked with staff to identify and prioritize strategies for achieving goals that reflect the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Identified and forwarded opportunities for cross-functional coordination and assisted with fundraising, budgeting, and other organizational needs. Reduced risk to the organization by formalizing HR policies and procedures. Built broad support for OEC’s policy agenda by developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with key interest groups and individuals. Continuing work performed as Program Director, led OEC’s efforts to reduce pollution from Oregon’s transportation sector with equitable, impactful, lasting solutions. Served as Interim Executive Director for 4 months in 2006.

Led initiatives to address climate pollution and to transform Oregon’s transportation system into a non-polluting system that supports clean air, climate stability, and healthy families living in economically viable neighborhoods. Duties spanned policy/project development, implementation, and advocacy; relationship- and coalition-building; outreach and education; and fundraising. Produced compelling written campaign material including reports, fact sheets, opinion pieces, and other communication tools. Served as media voice on transportation.KEY POLICY WINS: In this role and as deputy director, led or played a large role in achieving diesel engine clean-up legislation, statewide funding for public transit, the Toxic Free Kids Act, the Oregon Clean Fuels Program, the Oregon Clean Car Standards, and a first-of-its-kind in-the-nation tax incentive for per-mile car insurance.
