About Chris Hellstern, Aia, Lfa, Leed Ap, Cdt

Responsible design is good design, and at no time is responsibility more conscientious than when it is considering the good of both the planet and its people. I have dedicated my career to this collective wellbeing, progressing sustainability within the built environment and setting new standards for the field, demonstrating through numerous projects that regenerative strategies actually enhance design rather than hindering it. As an AIA Young Architect award recipient, my career as a licensed architect has spanned a variety of team roles and project types ranging from LEED to Living Building Challenge Certified buildings (of which I have designed five). My passion for the environment and education has led me to many speaking roles and university guest lectures across the country, and the creation of both the Seattle 2030 Roundtable and the Healthy Materials Collaborative. I am also involved with public policy at a local, state, and federal levels, helping with code development, state laws, policy development, and public testimony. Currently Miller Hull’s Living Building Challenge Services Director, I am a strong and constant proponent for the future of Living Buildings. I believe not only that Living Buildings can integrate into sustainable design curriculum, but also align with the missions and goals of many companies, further bridging the gap between firmwide and worldwide health, wellbeing, and happiness.
