Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University.My lab's research is focused on the mechanics of the interface between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM). This research includes the development of novel tools for measuring cell-generated forces and ECM mechanical properties, as well as investigations into the mechanism of cellular mechanosensing—the ability of cells to sense and respond to the mechanical properties of their surroundings. These mechanical responses affect physiological events such as cell migration, differentiation, and proliferation, and also have been shown to play a key role in a number of pathological states, including cancer and vascular disease. I have 15+ years experience in conducting independent research, including 2 years in the automotive industry working on Department of Energy funded projects, 2 years of research in computational modeling and fluid dynamics, and 10+ years research in biomedical engineering, cell signaling, and cellular mechanotransduction.Specialties: cellular traction forces, focal adhesion signaling, computational modeling, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, molecular biology
