In his role as the Manager – UA Solve, Chris Lerohl offers both business and product development support. On the product development side, Chris assesses company’s needs and helps companies access capabilities at the University of Alberta to find solutions.

At TEC Edmonton my role is to provide strategic business intelligence for technology-based companies and entrepreneurs in the Edmonton region to bring them to a market and investment-ready stage. I manage a diverse project portfolio with opportunities in various stages of company development and in different industries, primarily in oil and gas, power systems and clean technology.TEC Edmonton is not-for-profit, business accelerator, helping to transform technologies into business opportunities. As a partnership between the University of Alberta and the City of Edmonton, our goal is to capture the value of the innovation in our region.

Something was missing. We had a strong and supportive network on campus, however industry and student from other campus' were missing. We recognized that entrepreneurship requires an environment were people can come together to allow the entrepreneurial spirit to manifest itself. As student leaders in this province we recognized that we could create a platform to bring students together in a manner that would allow ideas to spark.

UA Solve is a new program by TEC Edmonton and the University of Alberta to help industry access University capabilities in terms of expertise, specialized infrastructure, and services. I have lead the development of the program from conception and currently conduct the business related activities with the support of the TEC Edmonton team. My role with UA Solve is to help companies with technical challenges find researchers and facilitate their engagement so they can develop solutions that work. UA Solve has a similar structure to a consulting company with customer service to both the client and our researchers as our focus.

ENG M 402: Introduction to the conceptual and practical considerations in identifying and developing new products. The theory and practice of project management applied to the creation of new business activities and ventures will be discussed. Topics include project management, innovation and entrepreneurship, business planning, marketing, and mobilizing human and financial resources. These will be applied in the development of a business plan for a business concept. The course is intended to provide engineering and business students with an awareness of specific planning, budgeting and scheduling techniques that can be used to implement and monitor new business activities.
