Esrc Funded Case Phd StudentshipUniversity Of Abertay Dundee Jan 2012 - Nov 2016Dundee, United KingdomThesis: Making It? Development Methodologies, Adaptability and Organizational Sustainability in Independent Game Development Hosted at the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (University of St. Andrews), supervised and awarded by University of Abertay, Dundee. Sustained research conducted in interstitial space between academy and industry investigating the impact of codified game development methodologies on the adaptability and sustainability of two award-winning commercial game studios. Thesis contextualizes and historicises independent game development in the UK before outlining disruption within the sector. Drawing a clear distinction between game design and game development, the thesis then identifies and interrogates the codified development methodologies game making organizations have adopted (and adapted) in attempts to overcome ineffective practice and realize organizational sustainability in the face of increased uncertainty. Exploring the opposing logics of efficiency and adaptability, the thesis evaluates how different game design and development approaches build or hinder adaptive capacity in organizations. It argues that when operating in a relatively certain environments, game development methodologies which enable efficient making may help ensure organizational sustainability. However, when an organization faces high degrees of uncertainty, efficiency is no longer the answer. Instead, game development organizations might be better served by building adaptive capacity to ensure they can recognise risks and challenges early, and develop the agility and flexibility to overcome them. Research explores startup culture and new thinking regarding entrepreneurship, the creative process, project management, adaptive organizations and creative teams. -
