Creative Producer
With a new team in place, including our full time Operations Manager and Active Outdoors lead, my role within the Roundhouse Birmingham leadership team focussed on producing the various strands of our creative heritage programme, projects, and displays; bringing together several years of business planning, heritage research, experience design, volunteer training, audience testing. Highlights included:- Creation and launch of our range of paid admission guided tour experiences, including 'Introducing the Roundhouse'; a summer long programme of heritage canal boat trips; and Birmingham's first bingo-themed heritage walking tour. - A comprehensive volunteer tour guide training programme (including becoming a tour guide myself).- Two huge programmes for Birmingham Heritage Week featuring talks; pub quizzes; courtyard sculptures; poetry, sketching and narrowboat experiences; and a range of partner heritage walks.- Managing a range of creative commissions to create Roundhouse Birmingham's heritage interpretation scheme including sensory installations, collage posters, window projections, murals, and bespoke history displays.- A series of partner and co-created temporary displays including community collage projects and heritage film programmes.- A key partnership with young activators from We Don't Settle, which which was shortlisted for Partnership of the Year at the Museum & Heritage Awards.- Producing six free, local digital heritage tours with young people; community partners; and volunteers.- Producing five free printed heritage trails exploring local green spaces, photography routes, and sensory experiences.- Establishing a regular Roundhouse Social event for local friends, tenants, volunteers, creatives and suppliers.All of these elements and commissions were put on hold for around six months due to Covid-19, but our new team pulled together to launch an award winning new place and programme during an extremely challenging time.
Visitor Experience Development Manager
In 2017 I became the first member of the new Roundhouse Birmingham team; joining a wider project team of colleagues from National Trust and Canal & River Trust to repurpose the derelict Grade II* listed former stables. I had a key role at the start of this new organisation incorporating a mixing of planning, developmental work and delivery across the following areas:1 - Planning and development the Roundhouse's visitor experience, key histories, messaging, and house style:- Business planning and modelling for our year-round visitor programme - financial and operational.- Producing and testing a brand new, innovative programme of paid visitor experiences, including interactive city walks; kayak, canoeing, and stand-up paddle board tours; guided tours of the Roundhouse; heritage talks, and canal boat trips. - Overseeing the early development of the Roundhouse's displays and heritage interpretation scheme.- Overseeing a group of research volunteers, who researched our new routes around the city, and increased our knowledge of the Roundhouse itself.- Recruitment of the new Roundhouse Birmingham team, including paid interns, and active outdoors officer.- Overseeing the output of Roundhouse Birmingham's social media activity during the project.- Managing a series of project partnership and suppliers including local theatres, active providers, heritage groups, and arts organisations.2 - Delivery of our project's community-focused activity plan in the Ladywood area of Birmingham, including: - Coordinating a range of free, behind the scenes tours and events at the Roundhouse prior to the start of our capital works programme.- Pop-up events at local cafes and community fun days.- Taster BSL walks and experiences with heritage partners.- Community co-design projects, including early making, designing and co-designing of our visitor displays with further and higher education partners.- Engagement activities with local schools.
Wonderland Project Manager
This role combined a range of my skills and interests: Brummie heritage and stories, creative project and event management... and going to the cinema!Wonderland is a Flatpack project and major commission for Birmingham Festival 2022: the massive cultural festival which happening in Birmingham alongside the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Wonderland explores the rich cinema-going heritage and story of Birmingham, examining how our streets, lives and interests have shaped, and have been shaped, by the act of going to the pictures.As Project Manager I supported Wonderland's curator to plan, produce and deliver a wide-ranging project featuring the following:- The Wonderland exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, produced in partnership with Birmingham Museum. Featuring bespoke interactives, photography, memorabilia, and film.- The design and launch of Wonderland.co.uk, the home of all things 'Wonderland' beyond our project. The site features a virtual tour of the Wonderland exhibition, stories and feature pages that continue to map +150 Brummie cinemas, past and present..- Coordination of research project delving into local cinemas, stories, trivia and collections with a range of volunteer researchers.- Producing and coordinating a series of Wonderland events throughout 2022 including zoetrope workshops, hidden cinema walking tours, a pop-up screenings in the former Waldorf cinema (now Shree Ram Mandir temple), and a Wonderland city centre treasure hunt.- A range of oral history interviews with people from across the cinema industry and cinema audiences.- Ongoing budget management, volunteer updates, and regular meet-ups with our senior producers at Birmingham 2022.
Festival Producer
As festival producer for Flatpack, I worked in a lead event production and management role for 2018's Flatpack Festival, which took in over 100 events in 10 days. I was responsible for preparing and kitting out spaces to deliver in film screenings; live performance; talks; family activities; guided walks, contemporary arts and audio-visual happenings at over 25 venues across the whole of Birmingham, and with a concentration of activity in Digbeth. Our venues ranged from the well-known, such as Birmingham Town Hall; Birmingham Hippodrome; and the Electric Cinema, to pop-ups in empty warehouses, at New Street Station, and in independent gallery spaces and bars.It was my pleasure to work with the Flatpack team to bring their programme to life by managing:- Technical production and AV with a range of new and regular suppliers.- Venue logistics and resources.- Licensing and risk management.- Temporary exhibition builds and Festival’s host venues.- Event and stage management at specific venues across the festivalThe festival was a huge success, you can find out more below!
