Established and implemented the technical direction of Open English. This included a microservice application architecture, Continuous Deployment pipeline, and long term application system design. Responsibilities included the design and implementation of our Payment Platform, Learning Platform, and shared services layers.Defined the software development standards and processes used for all applications at Open English. I implemented the initial version of our microservices architecture, worked with the architecture team to create our core services layer called the substrate, which all applications use and worked closely with operations to create our continuous deployment process. Our CD pipeline has successfully deployed more than 9,000 applications this year. As interim Director of Software Development I defined our requirements and project on boarding process, introduced OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) to OE as a way to focus the organization on what matter most. Conducted bi-weekly 1x1’s with the team. Worked closely with the PMO to simplify requirements before they got to the dev team. Communicate dev priorities to the company executives.Built out Open English' US based development team from one person to eight in about six months.I spearheaded OE’s mobile (iOS and Android) strategy, direction, architecture and implementation. This includes strategizing new apps and ways to present the OE Learning Platform on mobile devices. I worked closely with our Mobile dev team to implement the OE Mobile Applications. Worked closely with Senior Executives at Overstock.com to plan and execute various projects for Merchandising, Marketing and Finance.Took over and started driving Overstock.com’s mobile strategy. I was in charge of Overstock.com’s iPhone application including its technical and business direction from 2008 - 2011. I was the business and technical champion for Overstock.com’s foray into the mobile space. During this time I was able to increase mobile revenues more than 4x.Worked with Overstock.com’s CFO and Controller to implement several strategic changes to the company’s financial systems. The changes involved business and development teams, and changed the order/capture process. I managed the overall implementation and worked with my development teams to complete the project.Co-business owner and technical lead for Eziba.com, a private sale site launched by Overstock.com. Eziba required integration with many Overstock.com systems, a completely new look and feel, and a fresh way to present products to customers. The project was finished on time and delivered successfully in the summer of 2010.Tasked with launching, designing and managing the product mix for O.biz, Overstock.com’s B2B website. I filled the dual role of technical oversight and business direction for Overstock.com’s first B2B website. Worked with multiple software development teams and various buying groups at Overstock.com to create a unique B2B site that offered small businesses a new way to buy commercial grade products. The project was completed ahead of schedule and successfully launched in November 2009.

Prior to becoming a Director, I was the sole Principal Engineer at Overstock.com. In this role, I defined and implemented Overstock.com’s entire Java build pipeline, which included: Maven for building, Hudson (now Jenkins) for continuous integration, and Nexus for artifact management. In addition to defining this architecture I also trained dev teams on how to use it. I built a dynamic and highly configurable algorithm for Overstock.com’s EDI interfaces. I took over as president of the UJUG in January 2007. At the time, there were about 60 attendees per meeting; by 2012 there were more than 100 attendees per meeting with some months having more than 120 people in attendance.Established and assembled a board of directors to manage the UJUGSome of the responsibilities of the UJUG President include: securing sponsors annually, ensure meetings are of interest and relevant to the local Java community, provide technical presentations as needed, manage and create the UJUG website, handle all finances: including non-profit status, taxes and sponsorships; MC each meeting.UJUG is one of the largest Java User Groups in the United States.

My role at OC Tanner was to help teams meet their schedule and project objectives while at the same time encouraging improved knowledge of Java and the Java environment. Designed and implemented an auditing framework using JPA, Spring 2.0, and Maven 2. The auditing framework leverages Spring 2.0’s JPA container services to provide container-managed extended persistence context entity managers. The framework allows applications to record changes made to entities and log system activities as they occur.Organized and facilitated weekly meetings to improve the teams overall knowledge of Java. Developed a Grid processing engine based on Java 5.0, JMS 1.1, Hibernate 3.1, XStream, Spring 1.2, XDoclet, and Oracle 10g. Designed and developed the Grid’s Workflow processing engine and the components to perform work at each node in the Grid. Team lead and lead developer of a fifteen-member, $750K project. Responsible for the all aspects of analysis and design. The project used Use Cases to capture user requirements and UML 2.0 to document Object, Sequence, Component, and Deployment diagrams. The project won the PMI Portland Chapter-2005 Project Excellence Award.Designed, prototyped, and implemented a web application using Hibernate (along with the DAO pattern) for persistence, a custom IOC framework to wire components together, XDoclet, and Struts. The presentation layer used JSTL, Struts, and Tiles. CSS was used extensively as well. Responsible for analyzing and contributing to the overall system design for several applications at PacifiCorp. These responsibilities included participating in the design team, ensuring the design adhered to PacifiCorp’s blueprint, defining the component model, and specifying the deployment model.

Lead architect of two products. Mentored the team in RUP and OOA/D. Provided the technical vision and assisted in the implementation of each product. Organized design sessions to encourage, educate, challenge, and facilitate the design. These products were required to work with 10,000,000 data records per day. Envisioned, designed and implemented a cross-platform framework called the Substrate. Some of the services it provides are: command-line option management, configurable configuration, Unix platform independence, and pluggable extensions. Designed and implemented a C++ ORM framework, similar in scope to Java’s Hibernate.
