My passion for research, education and the development of technologies to improve people's quality of life has been a driving motivator of my work as an academic researcher and engineer in computer vision and robotics. As part of the federally-funded "bionic eye" project (Bionic Vision Australia), I have worked within a large multi-disciplinary consortium of researchers, engineers, ophthalmologists and clinicians, including as a key member of the patient testing team to achieve world-first outcomes with Australia's first bionic eye patients. As a university lecturer, industry engagement and work-integrated learning academic director, and science communicator I have also been able to apply my skills as an effective connnector and communicator to students, industry, peers, and the general public

From January 2013 I was seconded to Melbourne as a Visiting Researcher with BVA partner institutions: The Bionics Institute, and The University of Melbourne's Dept. of Biomedical Engineering. In this role my key responsibilities were to facilitate the translation of NICTA's core theoretical computer vision work into clinical testing with BVA's three implanted patients, as part of a first-in-human clinical trial of a 24 channel prototype retinal implant. This work contributed to the delivery of key functional outcomes for BVA's first clinical trial patients. My role also encompassed the facilitation of information flow across a diverse range of multi-disciplinary teams and programs within BVA as an active member of the vision processing, clinical, software, psychophysics and stimulation strategy teams. This often requires an understanding of complex concepts outside of my core field of expertise in order to communicate information across these teams. Show less -

Demonstrated achievements:- Delivery of algorithms and experimental results in human mobility trials (using simulation) showing potential benefits for implanted patients - project managed the development and building of a world class human mobility trial facility within NICTA's Canberra Research lab. I provided key input into the design of the environment, sourced all materials and fabric, and managed the hiring of engineers along with OH&S requirements to build the environment. Since 2010, this facility has been extensively used in simulation and BVA patient testing. - Delivery of high quality publications in top teir venues Show less -

My project looked specifically at how the honeybee's panoramic view of the world may be exploited to design better algorithms for robot navigation, given a similar digital spherical projection from two cameras.Demonstrated achievements:- Delivery of novel algorithms supporting real-time vision-guided robot navigation based on insect vision. The key contribution of this work was a novel algorithm for visually guiding a docking or landing manouuvre with a surface of arbitrary orientation without any knowledge of the surface depth or orientation. This was the first time this had been shown.- Delivery of new theoretical insights into the role of visual motion in biological perception- Delivery and presentation of a prototype “hazard detector” for driver assistance, featured on Australian Television's “The New Inventors” program (ABC1, May, 2008) Show less -
