About Christopher Mccaw
I am currently a lecturer in education at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education working in both the Master of Teaching and undergraduate programs. I make use of aspects of philosophy and social theory to think through key philosophical and sociological questions about education, schools and teaching. My concerns include the purposes of education, the nature and development of teaching as a practice, the implications of datafication and Artificial Intelligence on teachers' work, teacher identity, ethics, and reflective/reflective practice. My specific research interest is in the intersection of contemplative practices and teacher professional-becoming, which formed the basis for my PhD study.Previously, I have worked for eight years as a classroom teacher in a Government secondary school. I have taught across many disciplines, including mathematics, sciences and the humanities. Most recently I developed the Extended Investigation program at the Elizabeth Blackburn School of sciences, alongside teaching VCE Philosophy. In 2013 I completed a Masters research project which explored student ideas of learning and teaching, via their experience of two separate pedagogical life-worlds (experiential/inquiry & mainstream) within a government secondary school.
