Known for raising the bar, I overcome all sorts of challenges to enhance your writing/scripting assignments while meeting your deadline."You have to fight every day to keep mediocrity at bay." – Van Morrison"Perhaps there is a place to write and speak the way Jackson Pollock and Salvador Dali painted, but not in the world of B2B and B2C communications." – Chris MortonOperating in the high tech B2B, B2C, and medical device realms, entities as diverse as Telecom Infra Project, Exabeam, Philips Lifeline, Orca Security, and MedQIA engage me as a freelance marcom/technical editor – author – proofreader – graphic artist. Case studies reveal the innovative problem-solving abilities I bring to your projects: https://b.link/swpawwEmail Chris AT isntthatwrite.com. Or click the Providing services block (above) to request a proposal (@ no obligation). To ensure your messaging is current, I strive to be a good steward of the English language while keeping an eye on changing trends, a la linguist/author Steven Pinker. My style follows that of William Zinsser, Malcolm "Edit Ruthlessly" Forbes, MadMan David Ogilvy, and Sgt. Joe "Just the Facts, Ma'am" Friday.Along with considering an author's argument, logic, organization, and clarity/accuracy of expression, obviously good grammer 'n' speling (sic) count! I also work to stamp out, eradicate, destroy, and and otherwise abolish redundant redundancy. ;<)Factoid: You've likely heard of the internationally-known annual spelling bee connected with one of my ancestral surnames. Ink is truly in my blood—being a 5th generation Scripps descendant to publish in the US (since 1873), that I can instantly spot a typo is intrinsic. Too often being an annoyance, I've leveraged that as a positive attribute. Armed with the Adobe CC suite and ancillary graphics tools, I create such collateral as:• product brochures, ads, tear sheets, cut sheets, application notes, slim jims, rack cards, expo posters, newsletters, press releases, direct mail, optical disc labels, and other marketing pieces• IFUs and quick start guides• software, hardware, and operations manualsMy portfolio: https://isntthatwrite.myportfolio.com/...and backstory:Display advertising and movable type has been the basis of my family’s business since 1873. I was infatuated with the latter in grade school. In high school I was the designer of a B.B. King handbill (inventing my own hand-inked typeface) that's periodically displayed at Cleveland’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum.Early in my career I was the graphic artist and producer for display advertising I had sold for several trade magazines. In '86 my PC mentor suggested I mix all I know about traditional publishing with the emergence of desktop publishing (DTP). Thus began my bleeding edge infatuation with Aldus PageMaker 1.0a—coupled with an ongoing self-study of layout, typography, OCR, production, and related technology provided by Roger C. Parker's "Looking Good In Print." Kerning and leading, anyone?I soon became an authorized PageMaker reseller, also teaching DTP at a vocational center. I won advertising awards while promoting my VAR business via a direct mail broadsheet and a B2B magazine insert. Letters of commendation arrived from Autodesk’s (AutoCAD) marketing VP, the executive editor of Ziff-Davis’ "Windows Sources" magazine, and even Aldus's founder/president.I was a tech editor for "Using CorelDRAW! 5," a Que-imprint book about the popular PC vector graphics application (that competes favorably with Adobe Illustrator). I've taught classroom sessions in its use for the CompUSA chain. And over a three-year span in the '90s I single-handedly researched, wrote, and produced an employer's monthly 16-pp., four-color subscription newsletter.

It pays to follow former colleagues on LinkedIn as they move to another position. This is how I've come to be working again with Elias Terman, Orca Security's senior vice president of marketing. He was a champion of my remote editorial services when he held a similar position at Distil Networks and I helped his team over a two-year period:"It's hard to find a good copy writer. Plus, I'm very picky. Chris has become a seamless extension of our internal content marketing team. Center For Plain Language Mar 2019 - Feb 2022
    Richmond, Va, Us
"We're effectively tasked with advancing last quarter's paradigm-shifting directive to implement responsive transitional projections." – BAH!The Plain Writing Act of 2010 was passed over ten years ago, yet content writers continue to infuse their drafts with jargon. Or they write as if still trying to impress their professors (whose own writing is too often incomprehensible).A 2015 𝕋𝕚𝕞𝕖 article stated, "Microsoft found that since the year 2000 (or about when the mobile revolution began) the average attention span dropped from 12 seconds to eight seconds." And yet busy business people should be able to quickly read any collateral once, understand it in its entirety, and be equipped to take action on what they just read.As I state elsewhere on my profile, your content creators' copywriting should always flow in a logical manner. And they should use as few words as possible to keep readers engaged. This takes thoughtful craftsmanship and rewriting. On this note, here's a quote of my own:"Perhaps there is a place to write and speak like Jackson Pollock painted, but it's certainly not in the world of B2B and B2C marketing communications. Good writing is a craft."This LinkedIn course (not mine) teaches how to write in plain English: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/writing-in-plain-english/what-is-plain-englishBut if your content writers aren't inclined to take the course and you believe your blog posts, white papers, case studies, user manuals, ebooks, and/or marketing collateral need help, please contact me.

  • Medqia
Copyeditor | Copy Editor | Ad Designer | Marketing & Expo Consultant
    Medqia Dec 2017 - Apr 2019
    Los Angeles, Ca, Us
I'm able to use a range of my talents with MedQIA, a global CRO engaged in quantitative image analysis for clinical trials. As musician Charles Mingus said, "Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple—awesomely simple—that's creativity." And that's what I'm able to do as a copyeditor of MedQIA journal submissions.Recently I helped develop a process to programmatically populate anatomical components of differing values with matching numerical indicators as MedQIA produces a very large volume of patient medical imaging reports. To begin, I succeeded in retooling, then individually extracting PNG graphic components from an Adobe Illustrator file MedQIA had inherited. A few months earlier, another project took me back to my print advertising roots. Using Adobe InDesign, I was the designer of a full-page color ad soon to appear in a clinical oncology expo guide. Along with the ad I repurposed existing content to write an article that will appear in the same publication. And I assisted with critiquing the company's new expo booth design. This was a very good thing, in that I was able to correct a major typo in their booth artwork well before an observant expo attendee pointed it out.

  • The Chemquest Group, Inc.
B2B Marketing Editor | Graphic Layout Artist | Powerpoint Expert & Coach
The Chemquest Group, Inc. Aug 2016 - Apr 2018
    Cincinnati, Oh, Us
I'm a freelance editor/ad hoc graphic artist contracted with this global business strategy firm having expertise in the specialty chemicals markets. For them I edit marketing collateral, presentations, and other collateral. ChemQuest recently tasked me with consolidating and formatting eleven PowerPoint decks into a single, 700+ slide master deck. My job was to provide an attractive, uniform look—using a new design template—that would enhance readability and my client’s professional image. All the while I had to keep an eye on the clock to help minimize ChemQuest’s costs.Out of that project came this productivity enhancement I developed: https://www.ca-dreaming.com/ITW/Boost-Productivity-2x-Macros.pdfA 2017 assignment was to edit a 19 chapter, 400-page Microsoft Word report for a global specialty chemicals audience to give it a single voice. I was tasked to perform substantive editing and complex formatting over a compressed four-week period. Further, every table—of which there were many—required complete reformatting. Much professional, advanced wrangling of Microsoft Word was the order of the day, coupled with online research to verify the correct spelling of international companies. As a mentor, along the way I provided a few of the finer points regarding typography, e.g, the difference between an alpha-X and the multiplication symbol, and that of a hyphen versus an en dash (see https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/qanda/data/faq/topics/HyphensEnDashesEmDashes/faq0002.html. VP Aggie Lotz wrote, "I love your formatting work. I cannot imagine doing another PDF book without [Chris] as our editor...[He] has a top-notch work ethic, and superb substantive editing skills. He delivers on time without prompting and has a thorough grasp of editing assignments with minimal instruction. Plus, he charges a reasonable fee. I will be engaging Chris in more substantive editing projects for my firm."

Working with project managers on user manuals (IFUs) for FDA 510K submissions in the robotic medical device realm, I create regulatory document markups in Adobe Acrobat, as well as perform substantive editing and graphics layout in both Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign. To facilitate project scheduling and gather required inputs from various team members, I have introduced a new, streamlined collection process that eases the burden for all involved.Jack Bonasera, VP of Regulatory, Clinical, and Quality Affairs says:"Medrobotics required a complex regulatory document—part of a FDA 510K submission—to be edited by several engineers concurrently on a very short deadline. Thankfully, Chris Morton already had an excellent understanding of our very complex electromechanical, software-controlled medical device. After providing instruction as to how best to provide edits, Chris kept the deliverable on track by herding outstanding inputs from the multiple authors. These he quickly incorporated in the master IFU while also maintaining a redlined markup mandated by the FDA. Meeting all of our criteria, his management enabled this documentation effort to be completed on schedule. I am looking forward to working with Chris on our next regulatory documentation project."Medrobotics is a surgical products company having a core competency in robotics.
