Evaluated and negotiated settlements of a variety of litigated claims, including large losses and mass tort litigation. Gained a deep knowledge of medical and technical issues relating to toxic tort, asbestos, silica, mold exposures, etc. Maintained control and direction of litigation and close contact with defense attorneys. Represented the company in bulk settlements negotiating directly with high profile plaintiff attorneys. Other tasks included reserve management and control of legal expenses as well as trial reporting to senior management. Analyzed insurance contracts over multiple years to determine how coverage applies to specific losses and authored coverage/reservation of rights correspondence. Negotiated policy commutations as well as participating in the defense of coverage litigation.

Investigated, evaluated and negotiated settlements for bodily injury and property damage claims arising from auto accidents. Two years were spent on the National Catastrophe Team, handling auto and homeowner claims arising from events such as flood, tornado, hail, etc. My tenure at State Farm provided broad exposure to technical, medical and legal subjects on many levels and fostered the development of excellent communication and customer relation skills and strong negotiating techniques that are still used today. I also had direct supervision of support staff and trained new hires. Just prior to my departure, I developed detailed bodily injury claim evaluation procedures for the Texas region, which were incorporated into the “best practices” for auto claims handling.
