Approach And Landing Reconfiguration Engineer
Approach and Landing (A&L) is the final phase of the Space Shuttle descent trajectory and is flown manually by Space Shuttle commanders. The A&L group is responsible for trajectory analysis and optimization, flight production tasks, flight rule improvements, and astronaut training for the A&L phase of flight.• Analyzed flight-specific and generic trajectories of the approach, landing, and rollout phases of the Shuttle entry profile.• Performed design, verification, and quality assurance of flight software during pre-flight production.• Maintained and improved Visual Basic software tools used for automation of analysis tasks.• Presented technical data and analysis results to a variety of organizations, including high-level Mission Operations Directorate forums and experienced Shuttle commanders and pilots.• Developed simulation scenarios for landing and rollout training in the Vertical Motion Simulator at NASA Ames Research Center. Assisted astronaut training by answering questions regarding pilot performance, vehicle guidance, trajectory design, flight rules, and real-time operations.• Provided training to new members of the A&L group.
