Profile bio

About Chris Ousley

The pandemic opened up two whole new avenues of service for me: I'm now a licensed EMT as well as teaching English & Language Arts in a special education classroom in southeast DC. The days are long, hard, and rewarding. Currently I've been tackling the challenge of finding ways to build in music and gardening into my ELA lessons, while gaining some front-line experience in a grossly underserved community.I'm also currently the bandleader and manager of the internationally touring band Bumper Jacksons. It has been an honor and a privilege to be able to present my songs and stories to audiences far and wide. I perform songs both original and historic, and work to fashion a stage performance that inspires connection, joy, hope, and personal transformation. Pre-pandemic, I was a regularly invited speaker and workshop presenter at colleges, community centers, and schools across the country on topics ranging from 1920's ukulele techniques to how music & social justice history. I'm currently looking for opportunities to harness the skills gained as a performing artist, educator and public speaker to push my career further into more concrete social justice work. I would be especially excited by any organization that has a position that could work synergistically with my performing career!I'm also a freelance musician & solo performer on guitar, voice, banjo, fiddle, upright bass & ukulele. I also regularly take on individually curated projects. A few of note include: building a "Discograss" band for a special festival performance; working under a Maryland Traditions Grant to present a set of 1800's Swedish fiddle music at the National Folk Festival; curating a showcase of formally incarcerated youth poets performing works built in collaboration with a guest lyricist/rapper and backed by members of the Chuck Brown Band.I'll never stop being a student of science. On a personal level, I'd love to connect with scientists, researchers, and other nerdy people like myself who love knowing more and more about ourselves as conscious, intelligent, & fancy primates on this wonderful and precious planet.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Office Automation, Music Education, Music, and 46 others.

Bandleader, Musician, Educator

Current
Bumper Jacksons

Washington D.C. Metro Area

As a musician, I am in multiple instruments (voice, fiddle, banjo, guitar, upright bass, ukulele) and in multiple traditions (jazz, blues, folk, country, bluegrass, cajun, old time, swedish gammaldans) and the songs, histories, and stories that come with those traditions. I also write and perform my own original compositions with my touring group, Bumper Jacksons. I have won multiple awards and grants, including: multiple Washington Area Music Awards (Best Folk Album, Best Folk Band, Artist of the Year to name a few), Maryland Touring Artist Roster, Mid-Atlantic Arts Council Touring Grant, Strathmore Artist Residency, and received a Maryland Traditions Grant to study 1600s-1800s Swedish dance fiddling from an elder in the tradition. As an educator, I am a routinely invited speaker and workshop leader at schools, universities, festivals and community centers across the country for topics ranging from technical musical ideas to how music history intertwines with social justice. As a bandleader, I developed an employee management style that prioritizes non-violent communication (NVC), values-based consensus, democratic-socialist principles, and informed consent. These principles live out in practices such as: an open & creative artistic process; an open-book accounting system where employees had access to information on how every dollar was coming into the LLC and how every dollar was spent; membership in Local 1000 musician's union; etc. Wrote the entirety of the band’s press copy for PR outreach, led social media initiatives, planned and executed promotion efforts for recordings & tours, and directly engaged in face-to-face interactions with fans on each and every performance. Produced 5 full-length albums with varying budget sizes and directed not only the recording process, but artistic design for album covers, leaflet design, and distribution plans. Produced 3 full-length music video projects focused on positive messages and community engagement.
