Director, Center For Environmental & Geographic Sciences And Associate Professor

West Point, New York, Us

After completing a Ph.D. in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences, I was selected to return to West Point, serving first as an associate professor before being named the Director of the Center for Environmental and Geographic Sciences (CEGS) in 2018.DIRECTORReinvigorating one of the institution’s research facilities, I coordinate collaborative efforts across the department and target opportunities to build relationships with other partners and institutions, including the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, and the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program.Since taking over leadership of CEGS, I have doubled the number of students participating in research activities with partner organizations.RESEARCHSince 2017, I have secured more than $200,000 in grants. One grant, for example, allowed 30 students to conduct research with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.I also formed a 4-year partnership with SERDP for students and faculty to conduct environmental research as part of existing programs based in Alaska.EDUCATORAs an associate professor, I manage course development for and teach Military Geospatial Operations, Advanced GIS, and Introduction to GIS. To further encourage scientific understanding, I developed a capstone course that challenges students to grapple with real-world problems in small groups and present their findings and recommendations to senior analysts at NGA; students have also had the opportunity to brief the director and deputy director. For another research project, I led students as they developed a classified mapping platform for the NSA.• SpecialtiesGeospatial Information Science | GIS Risk | GIS & Social Media | UAS | Mobile Technologies | Geovisualization | Research & Data Analysis | Modeling | Partnerships | ArcGIS

Program Participant, Advanced Civil Schooling (Acs) ► George Mason University

Arlington, Virginia, Us

The Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) is a highly competitive program that enables Army officers to pursue graduate education for career fields that require advanced knowledge beyond the bachelor level.Building on my career, I worked to earn a PhD in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences. As I advanced in my studies, I saw that a number of students – many of whom were international students – were struggling. Collaborating with another PhD candidate, we established a peer mentorship program & provided opportunities for the participants to learn about and seek help on research methods, conference presentations, and preparing papers for publication, among other topics. Equally important, this mentorship program helped participants build relationships, as well as skills, for success beyond their studies.During my studies I also volunteered with the GMU Aspiring Summer Scientists Program, delivering presentations on the use of GIS in social sciences and other disciplines.• Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting PresentationsAnalysis of Social Media Data to Reduce Risk during Emergency Evacuations (with N. Deputy Chief, Space And Special Technical Operations, 101St Airborne Division

Arlington, Virginia, Us

The 101st Airborne Division has been one of the most active organizations in the US Army, and during my assignment I deployed twice with the Screaming Eagles. In my role as the senior space operations officer, I integrated technical capabilities – including geospatial intelligence collection – into the training & operations plans for this combat division with approximately 35,000+ people assigned. Managing equipment and systems worth more than $1 million & directing the efforts of 12 staff, I maintained a forward focus to anticipate how GIS data could support our troops on the ground.Leading the efforts of GIS & intelligence analysts, I coordinated 3D modeling to track IED emplacements on a daily basis. My team also leveraged GIS modeling to recover a crashed drone and to provide critical data to help with the crash investigation.Focusing on technical capabilities, I provided training for personnel and leaders at the front-line, tactical level up to general officer/senior executive levels that led to the capture of multiple enemy forces. As the analytical and modeling workload increased, I requested more personnel and implemented a scale-up plan as my team doubled in size. While deployed to Afghanistan, I led a multi-agency team to technical and space-based assets into a wide range of operations, include information operations. I also worked closely with a 48-member cyber team to incorporate its capabilities for deliberate and time-sensitive operations.Throughout my assignment with the 101st Division, I looked for and cultivated partnerships to expand the division’s capability in military geospatial operations, serving as a trusted advisor to executive leaders regarding GIS and space strategies, tools, platforms, and best practices.• SpecialtiesOperations | Strategy | Team Leadership | Senior Leader Advisor | Data Modeling | Budget Planning | Performance Evaluations | Cross-Functional Coordination | Partnership Development | Asset Planning & Utilization
