I’m moving in new directions, focusing on personal writing, including poetry, on Substack; volunteer work, and some political and environmental activism, although I'm not naturally an activist and I find it more useful to write and think than to knock on doors or leave voice mails for undecided voters, or those who find voting too much of a chore.In late 2016, I retired from full-time reporting and editing work after 35+ years with the San Francisco Business Times, Modern Healthcare, Healthcare Business/HealthLeaders magazines and other publications. Along with health care and health IT, my beats as a journalist included the wine industry, biotechnology, nonprofits and philanthropy, education, public relations/marketing, banking and general business news. But that was then. Now my main job, self-appointed, is to try to understand what's going on in the world from my own vantage point, and perhaps help others who are on the same path. For that job, the main skills seem to be thinking, reading, watching and pondering, with writing as a byproduct of all that.
