As a technical lead of the Launch and Operate group in Blue Origin's Enterprise Technology division, I design, prototype, build, evaluate, and operate distributed software systems to test, maintain, and fly space vehicles and rocket engines.This is a hands-on individual contributor role, aka challenging fun with purpose. I also mentor leaders in hiring for performance, capacity planning, development plans, and team dynamics based on my experience as a line manager and manager-of-managers.

Set up the Foundation to address the organizational needs of the growing SpaceUp unconference community. Developed a business plan for the organization, hired initial staff, and recruited the first Board of Directors.

Developed the SpaceUp concept based on successful BarCamp unconferences. Led an initial team of organizers to plan, promote, and raise funds for the first SpaceUp in San Diego. Built open-source tools in Python for Google App Engine to coordinate a worldwide group of SpaceUp organizers.

Design, develop, and deploy the Measured Voice social-media SaaS application, including evaluating technology platforms, choosing vendors, designing architecture and infrastructure, and procuring hardware and systems software. Also includes software engineering, quality assurance, and project management for a team of developers, designers, and systems administrators.(Note re dates here and below: Measured Voice was wholly owned by Captura Group, created as a separate entity to participate in the Code for America accelerator program. My time at Captura was split between these two overlapping positions.)

Wrangled modern Perl and XML/JSON/YAML data for the high-traffic Eventful website. Led development of the Eventful public API, which serves millions of requests per day. Created XML delivery system to generate large custom files for high-profile data clients.

Created and administered the SD Space website in Wordpress (PHP, HTML, CSS). Designed t-shirts, posters, flyers, and advertisements for SD Space and the Space Travelers Emporium retail outlet. Developed new projects and programs, from the idea stage through planning and volunteer organization.

As a founding member, developed the organization, social media, communications, and voting procedures. Created high-profile projects like SpaceUp and the Space Travelers Emporium. Developed technical infrastructure for the group, including the website, email, Facebook and Twitter presence.

Wrote technology and culture articles for GeekDad, a successful Wired.com blog for parents.

Led development of the NBC Universal Media Village web-based asset management system. Developed an e-commerce platform for Console clients including the San Diego Zoo and Boot Barn. Administered SQL databases, including schema development, optimization, and bulk data transfer.

Led development team for the flagship VelocigenX / Blue Titan Server Suite product. Developed web-based user interfaces, XML web services platform, legacy data source integration, and product documentation. Taught classes and tutorials on Perl and web services development.
