Directing a team of sub-editors and designers, I plan and organise the production of The Chronicle, The Journal, The Gazette and Sunday Sun. On a daily basis I copytaste and plan content for each title, liaise with regional editorial colleagues and attend daily news conferences, as well as coordinating with planners based in India. I also design, edit and revise pages, including front page and sport and supplements. I am responsible for hitting daily deadlines and ensuring the quality and accuracy of the titles. Since March 2020 the role was made remote (home-based) and I have had no issues with remote working. I joined the company in 2014 as a Print Content Editor before working as acting Print Publishing Editor from 2015 to 2018. I was promoted to Print Publishing Editor of The Gazette, The Chronicle, The Journal and Sunday Sun in 2018.

I took voluntary redundancy in 2013 and studied teacher training in Mathematics. I taught at two North East schools during the year, as well as learning new skills at Durham Scitt’s base in Aycliffe.I learned a range of new skills – such as improved organisation, workload management, planning, working with young people, teaching and behaviour management. Although in the end I chose not to pursue a career in teaching, I learned a wide range of new skills and dealt with many new situations and challenges which would be useful in any workplace.

I worked with colleagues to lead a team of sub-editors to handle news pages and commercial supplements. I joined as a trainee sub-editor in 2002 and was promoted to Assistant Chief Sub in 2003, Deputy Chief Sub in 2004 and then Chief Sub in 2005. I was responsible for a team of six, including a deputy chief sub and assistant chief sub. I organised the rota and carried out personal development reviews and trained staff. In addition to managing the design and production of the Gazette, I was also a regional IT super-user for our editorial system, which used InCopy and Indesign. Other duties included planning, overseeing and producing the South Tyne Star (weekly), commercial supplements and updating the Shields Gazette website.

Working withing the Corporate Research and Information team, I analysed local government statistical information to help inform Durham County Council's key decision makers. Maintenance of databases and spreadsheets, using Microsoft Access and Excel, producing reports of the changing economic situation across the county and analysing Census information. Mapping economic data to illustrate how socio-economic factors differed throughout the county. My work has been used to help secure local government funding for projects in the county. I also worked with other departments, recording and reporting on the County's key performance indicators.
