As the only PCB Design Engineer at the Largo campus, it was my responsibility to perform all aspects of PCB design from Landpattern Librarian to placement, routing and gerber generation, with a special emphasis on DFM, DFT and meeting all international agency approvals for electrical isolation, susceptibility and emissions including IPC and IEC60601. My duties included Schematic Symbol Librarian, schematic and BOM generation for all projects, as well as close collaboration with the Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineers to ensure that PCBs met their requirements and that all electrical Engineering Drawings met internal company documentation requirements and industry standards. My diverse engineering background enabled me to be actively involved in hardware and mechanical design. I created and implemented a PCB identification system to allow easy verification of prototype and non-prototype PCBs as well as RoHS and non-RoHS boards; created and implemented a software application to extract BOM data from Orcad Capture and convert it into an electronic format suitable for direct import into the company ERP/MRP system; and introduced new design methodologies that enabled bidirectional interaction between the ECAD and MCAD systems enabling the creation of very complex, tightly toleranced board outlines that were correct the first time and also provided accurate 3D models of the PCB assemblies for use in making detailed assembly drawings and for the mechanical designers to use in next level assembly models and drawings to verify compatibility with the rest of the mechanical assemblies. Many of the PCBs that I designed contained a mix of sensitive analog, digital, embedded, POL power supplies and three phase brushless DC motor drives. Plane counts in these complex boards were reduced, from previous designs, by using placement for reduced noise techniques. This not only reduced cost but produced quieter boards than had been achieved using more complex plane stackups.
