Using AI and ML to advance the state of the art in the residential HVAC industry on our way to removing a Gigaton of carbon from our customers' emissions by 2030.Introduced the use of LLMs to develop just-in-time procedures for our technicians. Using RAG to integrate manuals into our diagnostics toolsets.

i lead our Big Data and Algorithm development team for Diagnostics, our dealer-facing digital product: diagnostics.tranehome.com. I lead the algorithm development team. This team is split between mechanical engineer SMEs and data scientists. We blend diverse skillsets to move fast in a rapidly changing product development environment. This work is split between 1. brainstorming how we might diagnose a problem from the limited sensor measurements available, 2. then, investigating how our ideas work across a large population of customers, 3. Finally, we will work with dealers to physically verify our findings. Our main data analysis tools are Alteryx and Tableau, though the size of our dataset limits their capabilities. As the team's lead data scientist, I work on algorithms and data engineering, including platform and database design.I also manage our external R&D efforts with universities and research labs. We are always looking to expand these efforts!

I developed new products and features for Nexia, our Connected home platform, and our Trane home line of Thermostats. My code is running in millions of homes around the US and the world. This work is very experimental and happens at the intersection of big data and the modeling of the home (physics) and the people (statistics) in it. Connected home is a hugely challenging area with lots of big names as our competition. Our little team, a "startup" in a big company, has been in the industry longer than almost anyone (started as Schlagelink in 2008) and has developed a loyal customer base and continues to grow our business. My work includes:• Modeling of homes, energy, and heat flow• Modeling of human comfort• Modeling of electronics and how they measure aspects of the home• Electronic design• Embedded software and web development• "Big data" tool developmentMy role is very hands-on; I can spend a day split between the math of how heat transfers through space, then writing code to swim in our "big data" dataset, and then buried in embedded code to implement the needed change. Whole days are often spent at a real person's home installing sensors and equipment to test out the new algorithms.

Occasionally teach graduate-level classes in signal and image processing
  • Southwest Research Institute
    Principal Engineer
    Southwest Research Institute 1999 - 2013

For more than 14 years my work at SwRI focused on defense related R&D. I was principal investigator on more than a dozen R&D programs, including work for DARPA, ONR, ARL, AFRL, and primarily for the "DoD". My work focused on solving real-world problems related to defense applications including SIGINT and COMINT. My research areas included:• Analysis of sensor networks• Knowledge discovery related to intelligence applications• Statistics, machine learning, and computer vision for communicaitons signal processing• Electronic warfare and electronic designI have developed a number of devices and techniques related to communications, steganography, steganalysis, GPS, geolocation, and defeating covert communicaitons. At one point I even designed a component for a radio telescope and worked briefly on an algorithm for the Juno spacecraft which will be arriving at Jupiter in 2016.
  • Southwest Research Institute
Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer
Southwest Research Institute Mar 1999 - Mar 2008
    San Antonio, Tx, Us
I spent nearly 10 years doing embedded software design and development. Sensors and software that I designed are in use worldwide, including deployments on six continentsDigital and analog hardware design and debug. This included antenna, array, and receiver electronics design, including site design using computational electromagnetics and more traditional techniques. On the embedded front, we used tools like QNX and VxWorks running on boards in a VME chassis and processors in receivers. Eventually we switched to Linux on some platforms. Projects included work with FPGAs, ASICs, and even GPUs for acceleration of different algorithms.
