Patients and families often need someone who can advocate, clarify, and clear a path for the best care in a way that removes or significantly reduces the mental and emotional load of navigating multiple providers and health care systems. I have enjoyed integrating my obsession for improved patient care alongside my life science, social science, healthcare, and organizational performance experience and expertise in service to such patients and their families.In doing this work, I have also been able to help two large cancer-related research and healthcare institutes in Boston's Longwood area to improve various processes. One of my best initiatives includes improved collaboration between different care teams when reviewing blood work (particularly cultures) so as to properly and immediately treat cancer patients who are more susceptible to, or already experiencing, high-risk infections like sepsis. Presently, I am working on ways to offer a medical communicator to families who have a loved one entering a complex treatment program or other critical care protocol so the families can better understand such protocols, routines, support medicines, and overall care. In doing so, more questions are answered during times that often bring the highest stress and most "numbing" feelings for the families of the patients.My aim is to build and broaden this program so as to formalize a pilot and prove the principle of how patient advocacy at point of care can exponentially increase the quality of patient care and patient outcomes. -
