For two decades, I devoted most of my research activity in studying the mechanisms involved in the setting and transfer of the vestibular sensory information. I am especially interested in the physiology and pathophysiology of vestibular primary neurons. These neurons encode and transmit vestibular sensory inputs to the brain. I first studied the sequence of acquisition of their excitability during development. I’m now investigating the physiology and pathophysiology of their neurotransmission. I have developed several in vitro models and original technological approaches (Bartolami et al. 2011; Dalet et al. 2012; Travo et al. 2012, Albert et al. 2012). Primary vestibular neurons are particularly sensitive to several types of pathological situations (excitotoxicity, ototoxicity, infections, inflammation or trauma). Alteration of their integrity (especially their afferentation) is believed to be involved in a majority of vestibular disorders. However, there is little data on the mechanisms of establishment and development of vestibular insults within the inner ear. Also their correlation with the heterogeneity of the vertigo symptoms is poorly documented. I initiated the development of animal models of vestibular disorders that reproduce the symptomatology of the human pathology. These models have allowed us to star deciphering the correlation between the etiology and the symptomatology of vestibular disorders (Brugeaud et al. 2007). They also allowed us to bring the proof of concept that targeted pharmacological approaches are able to reduce significantly the acute attack of vertigo or protect the vestibular organs upon excitotoxic conditions (Desmadryl et al 2012, Dyhrfjeld-Johnsen 2013). On this basis, we initiated in partnership with Inserm Transfer the inception of a spin off (www.sensorion -pharma.com) that develops therapeutic solutions for vestibular disorders. I’m currently Associate Editor of the leading journal for the inner ear research (JARO).
