In my current position at Google, I work at the intersection of statistical modeling and large-scale engineering. In my previous role as Lead Data Scientist at Activision Blizzard, I worked on the development and implementation of machine learning algorithms for improving the user experience in games and using data to improve monetization.I've earned my PhD in machine learning and computational biology, during which I had the chance to work with excellent scientists at the Machine Learning in Biology group at Max Planck (Tuebingen, Germany), the Machine Learning Group at the Technical University of Berlin and finally in a ML/Comp-Bio group at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer center in NYC. After graduating, I spent one year at Microsoft Research as a post-doctoral researcher, where I worked on Machine Learning methods for statistical genetics. During these past years I've become what I would consider to be a data scientist - solving problems ranging from development of large-scale machine learning algorithms, handling complex data sets, visualization and performing large scale computation in a cluster environment (I'm the author of pythongrid, which is a small tool to compute on a sun grid engine). Going beyond method development, I'm passionate about software engineering, in particular in python and C++, and find it rewarding to engineer a working software solution, translating theory into practice.
