Artistic Practice:Singer is best known for incorporating mosses and other living plant life with glass, clay, bronze, found objects, and video into installation-environments and land art works that turn on notions of place, memory and time-passing. While his earlier works often inhabited entire spaces, his later series of intimately-scaled constructions of individually-glued and painted using painted pine needles still reference his own awareness of being interconnected with living energy of the natural world. His new installations using pine needles explore climate change and the acceptance of change as a radical act of human resiliency for moving forward. The Green Cube Gallery is a Canadian on-line gallery established to support artists whose practice is about and of the environment, to the art market. Whether working in traditional media or incorporating new technologies in response to scientific research in the life sciences, such as bio art or interactivity, our artists re-frame and re-contextualize our perceptions of the natural world, and how we are interconnected with it. Their works range from exploring non-hierarchical relationships with nature, leading us to responsible and equitable choices that can to turn the situation around, and quietly witnessing what is endangered or has been lost (both human and environmental).Discover a diverse community of artists, each celebrated within their respective fields, including fine art, fine craft, installation, new media, traditional media, ephemeral works, environmental interventions, bio-art, ethical land art, queer ecologies, more-than-human perspectives, and Indigenous Methodologies.In addition to the Gallery’s online presence, we will work with public galleries and artist collectives and other partners to create pop-up exhibitions. For some of these exhibitions, we will be seeking support to pay exhibition fees and/or commission artists to create new works and produce exhibition catalogues with texts by curators, art historians, other artists, and environmental thought leaders.As well, we have established an annual Writer-in-Residence program in which writers and poets will create new works about environmental themes and Climate Change. Directed the artistic vision of the Gallery’s contemporary and historic exhibition programming, inspired by the iconic and innovative Canadian artist, Tom Thomson. Directed the artistic vision of Canada’s only museum devoted to exhibiting, collecting and studying contemporary ceramic, glass and enamel art. Celebrated recognized fine craft masters while successfully steering the museum and its supporters towards an appreciation of cutting-edge contemporary expressions of these media such as installation, new media, new technologies and ephemeral art. Encouraged exhibiting artists to create new works, respond to the architectonic features of the exhibition spaces, increase the scale of their work and take risks while supporting their efforts conceptually and technically. Ensured that artists were paid well above CARFAC rates through sponsorships, donations, project grants and creative allocation of resources.- Conceived, developed and organized over 35 original exhibitions (through to 2016);- Wrote artistic direction and contributed additional writing for operational funding applications – achieved multi-year funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Waterloo as well as Museums Assistance Program (MAP) and Trillium grants;- Wrote funding and sponsorship requests for exhibitions and related programming;- Annual grants and sponsorships earnings averaging between $150K to $200K;- Produced 15 exhibition catalogues (including texts) and directed all aspects of catalogue production;- Researched, developed and documented the Permanent Collection, adding important contemporary and Canadian Cultural Property works;- Managed the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics and the RBC Award for Glass ($10K each) including jury selection, awards promotion, relationships with sponsors and organization of the Awards gala.- Fluently bilingual, actively included francophone artists from Quebec, Ontario, and across the country.
