In his book, Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, David Epstein compares the upbringings of Tiger Woods and Roger Federer. Tiger specialized early while Roger took multiple paths before later settling on tennis. The book goes on to demonstrate that the "wicked" problems of the world call for perspective and adaptability that can only be developed through broad and varying experiences, like Roger. The book resonated with me as someone who never had a singular passion but enjoyed sports as much as math, art, and other pursuits. It was my "well-roundedness" that earned an academic scholarship to Villanova's School of Business, and prompted my immediate attraction to the breadth of career possibilities that Marketing offered. Now, nearly two decades later, I've worked in several marketing disciplines from sports marketing to retail visual marketing to research and consumer insights to content and creative, before landing in more generalist roles overseeing multifaceted Brand and Omnichannel Marketing teams across various categories of business, big and small. Among my most worthwhile undertakings in that time was completing an executive MBA with Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management alongside a cohort that included leaders in tech, law, media, consulting, and other areas of business. In my current role as Vice President of DTC Marketing and Brand Development, I have the opportunity apply my diverse background to help create a strategic vision for multiple lifestyle apparel brands while driving the structure and processes that enable successful implementation and analysis. I am proud to have a path like Roger's. But, ironically, my biggest goal these days outside of work is to get my golf game closer to Tiger's.
